Gel nails anyone?

Hi all,

This is a question for anyone who has had gel nails . I quite fancy getting them done as mine are horrible but as they are permanent how does it go for getting them off re infection risk due to diabetes?

Needless to say, I have never had gel nails, but removing them has as much chance of causing infection as removing ordinary nail varnish, that is, as close to zero as you can get. That's as long as you get it done professionally, or use a special kit. Try it yourself, you might break the nail. Having diabetes makes not the slightest difference.

Thanks Spiritfree, that's great to hear . It's still all a bit new to me and I didn't know if the process to get them on and off involved harsh chemicals or chances of cuts.
Can't wait to have nice nails for a change ☺

Gel nails (done professionally) destroyed my nails for a while. The trouble is they have to file the top of the nail and they became thinner and weaker as a result. They looked spectacular but were high maintenance and need doing constantly because any growth shows a lack of colour at the base. Also, they need soaking in acetone to remove them which is damaging to the nails.

In the end I stopped them and my nails were thin, split and weak for a very long time. It may just be my experience but I'd never have them again. Sorry to sound like a doom mongerer but that's how it was for me. Read on the net about the reality of damage caused by gel nails from dehydration and harsh chemicals.

Hope this helps. You could try Nail envy, I've used it it the past with good results. Have had to buy some more this week as my nails are weak and peel, because I run out and kept forgetting to buy more. It's not cheap though.
It's like a clear nail varnish, the original one is nice and shiny the other one is Matt.
Day one. You apply two coats
Then every other day for 6 days you apply one coat
On the 7th day you remove it all and start start on day 1 again.
Your meant to continue this treatment.
I get mine from Boots.

If you are looking for a fab alternative you can do yourself, have a look at nail hugs - they are amazing!! As long as you can cut out a square roughly the shape of your nail you'll be able to do it lol. Super easy and they look great, I get compliments whenever I do them 🙂

They can damage the nails long term, my daughter does gel nails and as I already have weak nails suggested I only get the done for special occasions, but they do look good. I do find though that it is when I pick the colour off that I do most of the damage to my nails, if I wait for her to come and remove them the damage is not as much. And yes, by the smell when they are being done and removed I would say there is a few chemicals involved. But if you want them, go ahead and get them done.
