Relationship to Diabetes
Parent of person with diabetes
Hi, this is my first post. I am a parent of a 19 year old with type 1 , he was diagnosed at 12 , for the past 12 months he has been continually ill , ( hospilised twice) with severe gastric problems. He has had scans, x rays, endoscopyS and CT scans, and nothing is showing up! He hardly eats anymore as he is suffering so bad, if he eats a single piece of toast in the morning he then can't eat until at least 12 hours then he struggles. He is constantly bloated, he is a slim lad but has this huge hard belly. Sometimes he is sick after eating and his sickness, diarrhea and severe stomach cramps sometimes are so bad he has to be admitted, but still no one knows why this is happening. I am convinced it is linked to his diabetes, but when he mentions it the doctors dismiss it. He has just started uni and says he can't concentrate as he feels so ill and tired all the time. Does anyone else suffer with anything like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated :(

Sorry to hear of the problems your son is experiencing.

Has he been investigated for delayed-stomach-emptying / gastroparesis?

Some of the things you describe seem to sound a little like that.

Must be so frustrating and worrying that you can't get some clear answers - hope you get some clarity soon.

I have had mega problems with my stomach, feeling sick, full up quickly, flatulence, constipated. Lost 4 stone before type 1. Been for endoscopy now to get colonoscopy. I believe the diabetes is to blame for this but the doctors don't listen. I will be able to ask them now if I have gastroparesis.

They are some of the symptoms my son's gets, we keep getting told "no its nothing to do with his diabetes" and we asked out right if he has gastroparesis and they said " no people who have had diabetes for years and years get that! " hope you feel better soon.

I have gastroparesis and I'm on a Facebook site for diabetes and gastroparesis. Unfortunately younger people can get gastroparesis and it may or may not be because of diabetes. You say that your son has had a barium meal. Has he actually had a gastric emptying study which involves eating scrambled egg (or similar) with a radioactive substance on it and then being monitored under a piece of equipment/radioactive machine for approximately two hours? The gastric emptying study is considered to be the gold standard for identifying gastroparesis. The test is completely pain free just boring as you have to sit still for the two hours, although I was allowed to watch a DVD 🙂

Also what is your Facebook site?

It's called Gastroparesis and Diabetes support group. I don't post on there but it gives some background. But be careful because a lot of it is American based treatments and some of the posters can make you very scared about what gastroparesis can do. I've had gastroparesis for over seven years and, although it cane be a real pain, touch wood it has stayed relatively stable during that time. But it was a steep learning curve learning to manage it.
