I suffer from gastric reflux and take omeprazole for it. Can this cause a sore throat? I've got a sore throat on one side which I've had for nearly 2 weeks and I went to the GP and he has prescribed me some penicillin tablets for it. Should I be concerned?

Sounds like tonsillitis, for which penicillin is the correct antibiotic (years as a sufferer and mother/grandmother of sufferers). I also have reflux, for which I take Lansoprazole. The two conditions aren't usually connected. I hope you feel better soon.

I thought regurgitating acid could actually 'burn' your throat? - but there again I'd expect a doctor to know that ......

You're right, it can. But the sensation is completely different to the 'swallowed a golfball and it got stuck on one side' feeling you get with tonsillitis. Also, reflux goes away nicely when you take proton pump inhibitors (drugs names ending with ...prazole).

Would love to know why they are called that, protons are sub-atomic particles aren't they? 😱

Often wondered that myself Northener, there's a Wikipedia article explaining it here

I quite often get a sore throat when my reflux is bad, as said though it is more of a burning sore throat than the type you would need antibiotics for. Hope it feels better soon!

Now that's weird. For about a year I was suffering from vomiting each morning. I couldn't work it out. I just assumed I was being a nampby pamby or something with bathroom odours. I mentioned it to my GP who put me on lanzoprazole, which had a bit of an effect but not enough to stop the vomiting. I went back to my GP and got put onto Pantoprazole instead which has worked a treat.

I'm interested to learn why us diabetics seem to be more at risk of getting reflux. Is it the medication or another side-effect of diabetes?

My reflux pre-dates my D-diagnosis by about 30 years, and is down to a small hernia caused by coughing from a childhood littered with asthma attacks (before good preventative drugs were developed). No link in my case, but it would be interesting to know if there's something else going on in some people.

Indeed. I wonder if there is a higher rate of gastric reflux amongst diabetics, for whatever reason. I'd been a T1-er for about 3.5 years I think when the reflux hit me so perhaps its a gradual thing?

Worth remembering that anti-inflammatory drugs such as Neurofen, naproxen, voltarol (diclofenac) etc. can cause acid reflux, so can aspirin. I've been taking these for years (not all at once mind) and I have Omeprazole to prevent any reflux.

For the first day today in two weeks, I can actually say that my sore throat is getting better and I only have one day left of taking antibiotics. I do think though that my gastric reflux has caused this as taking omeprazole has helped too. Thanks for all your comments everyone.
