Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Gary Mabbut is one of my few ?diabetic heroes?. He was diagnosed Type I early in his professional (football) career ? late 1978. I have just read that he has had an emergency peripheral artery bypass operation in his left leg. Peripheral Arterial Disease is the main cause of diabetic amputations and yet mentioned far less than other complications. Get well soon Gary!

I remember reading about him in Balance a while back - hope he makes a good and full recovery 🙂

My brother was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 10 and Gary Mabbut was his idol, I remember his posters being plastered on his wall - and my brother is still a Tottenham Hotspur supporter to this day.

I hope Gary gets recovers well.

Takes some doing being a top class fotballer. Hope he gets better 😉

That's such a shame, I hope he recovers soon. I had a poster of Gary on my wall as a child as he was the only other person I "knew" who had diabetes. I interviewed him on Blue Peter about living with diabetes when I was about 14 and he lived up to my expectations as a genuinely good chap.

Surely you have video evidence of this... upload upload!!

I do have video evidence, and I shan't be sharing it unless a very large sum of money comes my way in the form of a bribe! I'm talking many thousands of pounds ;-)

It was a great experience, I was invited to speak at the then British Diabetic Association's 60th anniversary conference about my hopes for the future so I sent a press release to loads of places to try and get some extra publicity. Blue Peter came and filmed me at school and at home, and then interviewing Gary Mabbutt. It was a real upside to having diabetes.

Who were the presenters at the time? 🙂

Anthea Turner, Diane Louise Jordan and Tim Vincent. I got to go to Television Centre to see the show being broadcast live which was excellent, much better than a day in school!
