GAD test

Hello you lovely lot 🙂

I signed up to a research trial at my hospital and had a LOT of bloods taken. Today i recieved results of these tests including GAD, IA2 and ZNT8. Not that these names mean anything to me!
GAD = 338
IA2 = 135.8
ZNT8 = negative.

I have no idea what these numbers mean - other than that they confirm diabetes type 1! Should i be concerned about any of this?

Hi Nikki, I'm sorry, I don't understand the numbers either - can you ask the people running the trial if they suggest anything in particular? I doubt there is anything to be worried about, it's quite possible that I would have similar results without knowing 🙂 Will the researchers be publishing their results and conclusions?

They are tests for various auto antibodies related to T1.

GAD = glutamic acid decarboxylase
IA2 = islet antigen 2
ZNT8 = Zinc Transporter 8

But what the numbers mean depends on who did the test. The reference ranges differ.

I'd hazard a guess that you had high levels of GAD and IA2, which is pretty normal for a Type 1.

Thats okay Northie, just thought i'd put it out there and see. Knowing the numerous tests that members have more than likely had, i did wonder if anyone had experience of these.
I think the research team are planning a 5 minute telephone conversation with all participants so its possible i could ask them. All depends on what theyhave planned for said call!

And as far as im aware, results are due to be made public but won't be for some time yet.

Yes. The research team wanted 12 lotsof blood! Some had added liquids or powders, some were shaken...
And the reason i asked was because they were due to test for things not routinely checked for.

The 'normal' range for GAD is 0- 10.9
- mine was 338 so high!
And IA2 'normal' range is 0-7.4
- mine was 135.8.

Crazy levels but typical of type 1 diabetic!

As Mark says they are antibody tests related to T1D and depends who carries them out on results... I have had them done a while back and while I was then told I was borderline MODY. When I questioned this about three years was told they don't know as results were inconclusive but that I am to wear ID with T1 on it and identify myself as T1 on any admissions to hospitals. Haven't really followed up on it so this thread reminds me to dig out those results and follow it up on next appointment. Thanks Nikki 🙂

I did manage a brief chat with my doctor today who doesnt particularly get what it means, other than raised antibodies shown as T1D. Kinda knew that, was the whole point of the trial!

I am due my hba1c next week. And a consultant appointment later this month. So i'll see where i stand in April
