Hiya, following my good news a few days ago about a significant reduction in HbA1c, I feel as though I have been brought to do earth with a bump.

With cholesterol at 3.3, blood presssure at 124/74, HbA1c 7.9 (down from 10.4), I was understandably feeling really pleased with myself.

On Friday I saw the dietician for what I thought was a mini type DAFNE thing, although he was at pains to tell me it was not a DAFNE course as they are purely for Type1 s. Hence the apology, as I had said it was a pilot scheme for Typs 2s

He wants me to half my insulin (albeit not all at one time). As I am very clinically obese, he says I will never lose weight takang so much insulin. Therefore, he recommends, I think you would say one unit of inuslin to 10 CP units (I hope I have explained that correctly) initally with the Novorapid, and to slowly bring down the Lantus. To overall at least more than half the 90-100 units I am currently taking. He also wants me to increase my Slow Release Metformin from 2 to 3 tablets at night (agreed now by my GP).

It was a huge amount of information to take in, in just over a hour - plus having had gold stars from the consultant, DSN and my own GP, on getting the HbA1c down, I feel now a bit dejected and that it is almost like starting all over again. OK, I know that he is doing his best for me but it was certainly pride coming before a fall, I came back down to earth with a bump.

I have had a couple of days to mull it over and now feel it is the right way to go, I think. I have copied, and stuck onto my fridge the carb content of a number of foods (I got on the XPERT course), a calculater and notebook at hand as I have to keep a VERY detailed food diary and explanation of insulin intake and then to revisit him in 2 weeks.

At the moment I feel as though my entire time will be taken up with calculations prior to injections, but I know it will soon become second nature.

As ever, I would value any/all comments from the diabetic family

Wish me luck

Hazel

Hi its sad but true as far as I am concerned , Insulin = weight gain !! the more Insulin you take the larger the appetite = the more Insulin to cover the food etc , it is a vicious circle . Since I have drastically changed my diet I have over halved my Insulin doses and lost all the weight I gained after first starting on Insulin. Are you going to be Carb counting ? I would say everyone I know who does have excellent levels and are within a normal weight range. I am am extreme Low/ Minimal Carber on the otherhand and avoid most Carbs. Good Luck with everything , let us know how you get on !!🙂

Hi Hazel.
Don't know what to say, what a bummer to feel like you are starting again.

Good luck

Julie xx

Hey Hazel, no need to feel down! After your terrific figures, that you should rightly be very proud of, you are now at the next stage at becoming a fitter, lighter and healthier you 🙂

It's good news that the dietician feels that you are now ready to start reducing your insulin - this will be better for you not just because of potential weight loss, but also because you are likely to have less problems with injection sites over time. It certainly seems daunting that you are to try and reduce by 50% or more, but try not to be overwhelmed by that target - baby steps are what is needed and each step will be another little victory for you.

Good for you - you're doing really well, and I am sure you will continue to do so!🙂 And remember we are always here to help in any way we can!

pop into the low carbers thread if you need any tips about low carb meals :D

yeah Hazel , you have done so well!

I dont know how long you have had this Hazel but some of those results you have people try for years to achieve and thats because it simply isnt easy. You have done well, be proud!

The other thing to say is, I dont think doctors start you on a new reguime when you either cant cope or dont do well. You have shown persistance and that has gone right through to your results, this could also work for you too. I just hoped when I read it that amount of metformin doesnt make you queesy!

Hazel, lots of love and best wishes- you can do it x
