Full fat coke...grr

Despite, as always, asking very clearly for diet coke I've just been served and drunk a pint of full fat coke (one of those instances when you're really thirsty and down the whole thing in less than 5 mins). I noticed afterwards that the rim of the glass was sticky, so I tested it and yep it's full fat coke.

Took it to the barman who tried to give me half a pint of diet to replace it - so I politely but firmly asked for a full pint as that was what I had paid for! He asked me how I knew it was full fat so I explained that I could test with my BG meter which detects glucose. He apologised and all, but still.

It makes me so cross. I know it isn't unusual but it makes me so frustrated! Presumably I am going to go high now (but I have eaten - so I'm hoping that will slow the glucose release down) - but if I bolus for it, the peak of the insulin will obviously completely miss the peak of the coke. So I'm just going to keep testing and give corrections where needed.

It's not much to ask for, and I hate that people don't take you seriously when you try to explain that drinking it without knowing could see you end up in hospital. GR!

/rant over!

I'm always very suspicious as to whether it is diet or full fat coke.
Half time the person pouring it couldn't give a monkeys.

How annoying 😡

Labelled bottles or cans seem to be the way to go then...
I used to love full-fat coke too; diet is just not the same! :(

I'm new to all this, so can I just ask what are diastix and do I need some?!

diastix are available in pharmacy's For about ?5.

Hi

I always second ask. I know it is about my child but if you are ok with saying it you could say 'is this definitely diet coke because if it is full sugar I may well end up in hospital'. Many a time when they are not sure what they did they throw it away and pour another 😉

Hi Donald 🙂

Thanks - but what are they?!

They are like the Ketone sticks, but instead of testing for ketones they test for sugar. They were/are used to test the sugar in your weewee instead of doing a blood test. But we use them to check for sugar in the cola instead.

Ahh, thanks Monica 🙂

Is there anything else they come in useful for testing too? I suppose other 'diet' drinks?

Any kind of drink that you're not sure if it's diet, especially the ones from the "tap". Shiv had this problem the other month, where she thought she was getting diet sprite (or was it 7up) from the "tap", but it was full sugar.
I put a stick in my J2O once just to see what happens.

Right, I see - what a nightmare

What happened with the J2O?! I have to admit I haven't even looked at them since starting testing - just assumed they'd be too high?!

I found on the Starbucks website there are a couple of drinks there with no added sugar, so I wrote them down and keep them in my purse - got caught out in a coffee place in Stratford Upon Avon cos I don't like hot drinks and the iced one I ordered was just pure sugar I think! Costa coffees cafe late is good though - just iced decaff coffee with nowt added 🙂

And what happened Monica?

Must admit I didnt twig you can use diastix for drinks doh! I shall make sure I keep sme in my testing kit from now on.

The little bit at the top of the stick went dark maroon(?)= lots of sugar😉
The darker the stick the more sugar. J2O hit the top level

Oooh, marroon lol! SO I was right to avoid them then haha

Hi Donald - no worries!
I've only been joined a couple of hours and I've learnt loads already 🙂

Just a word of advice, 'no added sugar' drinks can still be full of sugar ie from fruit juice. So Starbucks might not be adding sugar to a product, but they can still have sugar in them anyway.

Saying that though, generally no added sugar squashes (ie Robinsons) are sugar free anyway 🙂
