Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Sorry to be a pest..... What fruit can I eat, and how much per day. Also, I eat 1 cup of cooked pasta or rice, when I have a meal. There are so many conflicting ideas. It seems that it's harder to sort out a diet for Diabetes2. I've asked to see a Dietitian, but not succeeded. Do I need a testing machine? I did ask. Is there a good pamphlet to use. We are vegan, so don't want to miss out on vitamins. Thanks, Anne.

Go on the web. They are not that much & I could not do without ? 🙂

I suggest that you get a mail order, cheap to use meter - then you can test to see how high you are spiking eating high carb foods.
Anything made with grain is going to be high carb, and sugary fruits are best avoided - taking a multi vitamin and mineral tablet is something I do a several times a week.
My first meal today was a bag of green salad, vinegar and oil dressing, tomato cucumber radishes and beetroot, a red sweet pepper and a couple of celery sticks. I added protein which you would not eat - but there must be suitable protein sources?
I don't eat rice nor pasta - nor any high starch food, and I have a small portion of berries occasionally.
A vegan mind in a diabetic body is one of the more problematic combinations.

Hi, any fruits that fulls under the “Berries” category are usually pretty low in carbs and low GI. Ie, Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries etc

Legumes are usually low in GI, rice can be medium/high and can course a spike, so portion control is key.

Highly recommend a tester, you can test two hours after eating to see the effect.

My diabetic nurse gave me a test monitor when I asked but I have to buy the strips. The monitor came with 10 strips and lancets and now I buy on line. I definitely would advise getting one, it would have taken me forever to get even as far as I have without.
Good luck .. The road seems to go on forever and it's a steep learning curve.

Tolerance to fruit, like most foods, varies from person to person. Personally I can eat most fruit, in moderation, without significant effect. I avoid grapes, mango and melon, mainly because of what I’ve read about them. As far as pasta and rice is concerned, I suggest you stick to brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Another tip, which certainly works for me, is to cook the rice and pasta in batches, cool it, bag it into portions and freeze it. ( 100 gms brown rice and 120 gms pasta, cooked weight suits me ) . Reheat the portion by thoroughly boiling it from frozen for a few minutes. Pasta and rice done this way is great for me but might vary with somebody else. I also do the same with mashed potato ( 150 gms portion ).

Hi. Many of us test our BGs (blood glucose) to see how the various carbohydrates including fruit affect us, so that we can make informed choices.
Sadly unless we are on medications that can cause hypo’s it rare that we are provided a glucose meter and test strips, but do ask gp/nurse as some are more enlightened

Have a read of these
This one explains how

If you buy your own meter and test strips , this is the cheapest one we know of to self fund the ongoing cost of the test strips
It’s a perfectly good meter that many with T2 use , it’s test strips are around £8 for a pot of 50 where other brands are over £15 for 50 .
You will need to buy more test strips and one box of lancets as they only provide 10 in starter packs

This method takes longer but economises on the cost of strips
