Relationship to Diabetes

It is of some concern to be that not enough advice is being given or information on just how bad fruit juice is for diabetics. No one tells you that just 25 ml of apple juice ,(which is just a mouthful) is the equivalent of eating one apple. I lay the blame for my diabetes firmly at the door of the health advocates who promote "it's great , it's healthy to drink more fruit juice" I used to drink big glass of orange ,tomatoes juice, cranberry juice regularly unaware of the fructose risk. The body readily absorbs fructose in its liquid state, it goes straight into the blood without being digested! This sends massive overloads of sugar into the blood instantly, for example a large glass of orange juice is the equivalent of eating 20 oranges in one sitting without the fibre. I know very few people who could eat that many in the time it takes to drink a glass of the same. Diabetics should never drink fruit juice only eat whole fruit, fructose is worse than eating a bar of chocolate at least the body takes time to break down the fat in chocolate. Fructose by comparison passes into the blood seamlessy from the mouth to the other end. Simply there is not enough warnings about this on the TV,news, etc. I have seen kids at school buying litre cartons of juice and downing it in one. The rise of fruit smoothies having a similar effect. It's not the kids fault, parents,us and them are simply being told it's good for you. !!more is needed to warn of the very real risk fresh fruit juice has of causing diabetes

It's not only the fructose to worry about. There is also a lot of other sugars they shove in as well. Ive always believed fruit juices to be unhealthy, even before l was diagnosed.

We agree with you - good luck trying to change the general public's perception though, when the media and even a lot of medical people persistently keep telling us that it's good for us!

I think commercial fruit smoothies are the biggest evil for portraying themselves as 'healthy' :( An 'innocent' fruit smoothie is very high carbohydrate, and 80% of that is sugar - 120g carbs per litre, and 100g sugar. 😱 Before I was diagnosed I would never have thought twice about drinking half a litre, and patting myself on the back for being 'healthy' 😱 :(

Same here. I used to get the (not so) innocent smoothies all the time, thinking that they were healthy!

I once used to live near a gym which had a smoothie bar right by its entrance. It'd always be packed with people who'd just put themselves through hell for an hour trying to lose weight, all guzzling litres of very expensive smoothies.

I can't help but think they'd have actually lost more weight and saved money by being lazier and not joining the gym in the first place.

A while back a lady on the forum related a tale of how, in a health and fitness club or all places, she had found it virtually impossible to purchase food that would satisfy her hunger without clogging up her arteries, spiking her blood sugar levels and sending her blood pressure through the roof. She was compelled to bring her own food, but warned by the manager that this was against the rules and she would risk getting her membership cancelled if she persisted. Here’s how I imagine the conversation went…

I’m so sorry madam, you can’t eat that here,
We’ve a rule against bringing in food,
You’ll find what we offer is healthy and fresh,
So don’t eat your own – that’s just rude!

Our menu is here, please read and you’ll see
The wonderful things that we sell!
Both savoury and sweet, vegetarian and meat,
And a wide range of soft drinks as well!

For our sandwiches we use only fine refined bread,
As white as the snows before Spring!
We can fill it with Spam, crispy bacon or jam,
Or sausages fit for a king!

Ah! I see our pork pies have just caught your eye!
They’re served with a big plate of chips!
Come on, don’t deny that you’d love one to try!
I can see that you’re licking your lips!

What’s that? A nice salad? No, I don’t think we do,
There’s never much call for that here…
We’ve some nice battered fish you could have if you wish –
We make all our batter with beer!

Now, to wash it all down, then you could go to town
With a full sugar energy drink!
The cups are so big if you fell in you’d drown,
And there’s no finer tonic – don’t you think?

What’s that? You’ll decline? Well, I feel I must say
That you look like you need a good meal!
For you’re thinner each day, like you’re wasting away,
Just imagine how much better you’d feel!

😱 :D

Tesco, despite partnering with DUK, promote fruit juices as "healthy" and have even in the past labelled them as "low GI" would you believe. o_O Someone ought to inform them that "natural" does not equal "healthy" (lead, uranium, deadly nightshade, fly agaric — all 100% natural), and that fruit juice is as much sugary water as any fizzy pop. 😱🙄
