I was shopping in Lidl's yesterday and saw high protein fruit flavoured yoghurts. I read the label as always and it worked out at 24g carbs for a 450g pot and 15g sugar. I thought that this would do me for lunch but I was concerned about the sugar!!! So should I ignore the sugar and just count the carbs as usual or are high protein products a no no???? So confusing

I don't know about the Lidl ones but the ALDI Brooklea high protein ones are 5.4g carb per 100g and 2.7 sugar and it is a 200g pot which I actually find too much so just have half.
Seems about the same for Lidl ones, you are not really going to have the whole pot in one go so for a sensible size portion they seem fine. I think they are also low fat.
You are going to get yourself in a tangle if you start looking at the sugar instead of just the carbs. You might consider the sugar if you are comparing two products with the same carbs and choose the one with the lower sugar.

I prefer to make my own fruit-flavoured yogurt by adding fruit to a portion of Greek yogurt - chopped strawberries, for example.

same here. Fruit + yogurt = a more natural fruit flavoured yogurt (I get enough protein daily without wanting to add more)

I try to make my own fruit flavoured yogurts by adding chopped fruit to natural yogurt and its variations - Greek, skyr and so on
Besides yer actual fresh fruit Iceland, and probably other places, sell packs of frozen mixed fruit intended for making smoothies which work out a bit cheaper; and don't forget the 10% over 60s discount on Tuesdays

Sometimes I forget or feel lazy so I mix fruit yogurt and natural yogurty stuff and keep a bowlful in the fridge for a day or two or three
This effectively reduces or dilutes the total amount of sugar.
Could add cinnamon?

Also, sometimes I add a couple of spoons of sugar free muesli which adds fibre and turns it into more of a snack, but doesn't affect my bg much
As it soaks it softens & swells the oats & nuts.

Put the whole shebang in the fridge, aye, spoon an' all!

I normally do have berries with Greek yoghurt but last couple of I have had IBS flare ups. It's because if I repeatedly eat the same thing for a while my guts let me know. It will be the berries this time!!! I can't have nuts and seeds to often for the same reason!!! Hey ho onwards and upwards and thanks everyone for their advice. @Leadinglights yes I can eat 400g of yoghurt in one go lol

That may be where your problem is, a person at work was doing some research on the benefits of probiotics and was having 2 litres of probiotic drinks in a day and he became seriously unwell.

Thanks @Leadinglights I think. Don't know where probiotics come into it but I would eat 400g of higher protein yoghurt for lunch and only that!!!!!

That doesn’t sound like a very balanced meal - no fruit or veg with lunch? A serving size of yoghurt is usually more like 100g, could have a smaller serving and add something with it to make it more varied and balanced?

Probiotic yoghurts are ones which have live good bacterial culture to promote good gut health. Overdoing it does not.
Check your pot of yogurts and it should say if it has the bacterial cocktail in it.

I can't stand veg except carrots and peas. Sick of berries. I love fruit but so confusing on which ones I can eat??? Hate salad so I never know what to eat. Can't remember when I had a balanced meal. I don't eat it everyday for lunch just when I can't think of what to eat. Low carb is a nightmare for me and so is being diabetic

No probiotics.

Why do you low carb if it’s a nightmare for you? Why not try a different diet?

What would you suggest? I thought it was the only way to keep your blood sugars down? Have I got that wrong?

Low carb isn’t the only way

What about plant based - that’s shown success for t2

Or moderate carb but more exercise

Or whatever other diet suits you best and whatever exercise / meds make that work for you?

My preferred diet would be, porridge or cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta based dinner or shepherd's pie, fish pie but has to have mashed potato!! That's how I have always eaten. I love all meats, eggs and cheese. This must be too high in carbs??

If that’s what you’d like to eat, then eat that? A vegetarian version of this as part of a plant based diet may work, or this but with more exercise and/or medication. You need to find what works for you not just copy what works for other people.

Meats, cheese and eggs are low carb, it is the other stuff you mention which is high carb but if you moderate your portion then you may find it OK but that is why testing with a home monitor is useful as it tells you what you can eat as well as what it is not wise to.

I'm having Shepherd's Pie for tea tomorrow but I'll top it with mashed cauliflower or mashed celeriac for a fraction of the carbs in mashed potato. I had a ham & cucumber sandwich for lunch today but made it with my wife's GF bread as it's much lower carb than regular bread. Yesterday we had a Bolognese but I had mine with red lentil pasta rather than spaghetti as it's non-grain and lower carb than durum wheat pasta. Simple swaps but they all add up to a big carb saving and keeps me on track for less than 130g carb per day.

I made a fish pie and used some bread, fresh herbs, spring onions and Cheddar made into crumbs as the topping. I often do the same with left over cooked chicken with leeks, mushrooms in a creamy sauce.
