So what happens to all the type1's who are not under a clinic? Does this mean that they are not entitled to sensors?

If you look on line for your area's drug tariff have a look on there and see what it says about CGM and Libre prescription.
Well I'm not even under a diabetic clinic but now have to be. What's frustrating is I don't need to be as my diabetes is really well controlled. Out of interest where would I find my local drug tariff?

Just google it 🙂 I just put in Cornwall drug tariff and it came up no problem.

Found this. https://gmmmg.nhs.uk/?s=Libre+2 this is the latest update on the libre 2. Was done in 2021...... This is a joke. Clearly if the Drs are following this it's out of date and not being updated. This is word for word what my Dr said to me.

You ask your GP, who refers you to the hospital team. (That's what happened when I thought there was a chance I qualified for a Libre a few years ago. They had seen me, but I was no longer seeing them routinely because that's not how this area does things.)

That’s what I did, but by the time my GP nurse had messed up the referral, and then redone it, then I'd waited several months for a clinic appointment at the hospital, even a telephone one, then they had to approve the request for a Libre, which took months, and only after several reminder emails to the Consultants secretary, then a wait for the training webinar, then a wait for the prescription and paperwork to be issued, it took a year from start to finish. Meanwhile I'd carried on self funding.

@neosegauk - sorry to read of the pain and hassle you are going through with this!

Although I’m under a hospital clinic, my initial introduction to the Libre was all done remotely. The hospital called me to say I was eligible and would I like to have the Libre, having said yes, they sent me an email with details and links to request an initial trial sensor from Abbott, sign up for the Abbott introduction course (done online) and to send them the confirmation email from Abbott saying I had attended the course. Once they received this they contacted my GP to get the Libre added to my repeat prescription. It all went really smoothly and quickly, although it was about a month from the initial hospital phone call to starting on the Libre.

So, I would hope that you could get your hospital team to follow this route and not have to wait for a face to face appointment in July! But I guess all areas are slightly different unfortunately- I’ve got my fingers crossed for you!

So I will not give up on this guys. I've found Greater Manchester Drug Tariff who decide and create guidance for all local healthcare in Manchester.

What's odd is I'm not sure all Drs follow this as I have many Diabetic friends who have the libre 2 from their Drs.

Here's my epic email to them including Dr Kar and my Drs details at the end but not included them on here.

"Hi,

My name is Richard and I am a type 1 Diabetic.

My doctor recently prescribed the Libre 2 Flash Glucose System (CGM). It has honestly been a life changer and helped me monitor my glucose levels really well and I would say it has improved my health and Diabeties management.

I requested a repeat prescription, which I had done previously two times. I was advised by the GP that he couldn't prescribe it. He and his colleague had found some guidance that was issued by yourselves stating I have to be prescribed this at a Diabetic Clinic.

The Diabetic Clinic is under immense pressure, when I had contacted them at the start of this ordeal, they advised that I would not get an appointment until at least June/July.

I feel that having this appointment is a waste of time for me and them, because another patient who needs specific care could use that appointment. Where as I only need it to be prescribed the Libre 2, which the NICE guidance states no longer has to be prescribed by the Diabetic Clinic.

Your guidance is way out of date around the Libre 2 and GCMs in general (your guidance was last updated in 2021 and a lot has changed since then). The NICE guidance was updated in April 2022 allowing GP's to prescribe it without having to attend a Diabetic Clinic. Every diabetic with type 1 Diabetes should have the right to have a CGM now.

I've discussed the above with my GP, he confirmed he had contacted you and addressed the out of date guidance. But he was instructed to follow it. This guidance no way reflects the new and updated NICE guidance and could be impacting many other Diabetics. Surely if there's something out there that can help Diabetics better monitor their glucose levels and support their health in the long run is also a big win for the NHS.

This is your guidance on Libre 2 and how it should be prescribed

Here is the latest NICE guidance from 2022

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng17/chapter/Recommendations#continuous-glucose-monitoring

I trust you will update this to the reflect the NICE guidance and inform that my Dr can prescribe the Libre 2, whilst you update your guidance.

Included is Dr Partha Kar who is the Diabetic Lead of England who ensured the NICE guidance was updated so Diabetics had easier access to CGM's (Libre 2 etc) by allowing GP's to prescribe it not just Diabetic Clinicians.

Dr Kar here is another example of local authorities using out of date guidance."

So a small update. This Manchester drugs tariff guys (who are randomly part of Newcastle's drug tariff.... The NHS is many roads of confusion) have said the lead pharmacist of Manchester will be contacting my Dr in regards to this and I should hear from him around this.

Not sure what this means, hopefully god news and he's told to prescribe it. Doubt it but here is hope.

Tried getting a telephone appointment with my Diabetic clinic but they won't do it and I have to see them as I am not registered with them....

Let's hope this is the final poke of the wasps nest required to get a response.... for you at least. No doubt there are still others struggling with similar reluctance from their HCPs or prescribing body.

If this does and they do prescribe it may open the doors for others in my area aswell and take the strain off Diabeties clinics. I'm sure there's a ton of people going to those clinics just to get CGMs.

Yes, absolutely. There must be others in your area run up against the same brick wall, so hopefully your action will enable them to get access too. The clinics are already overwhelmed with extra patients as a result of Covid without this sort of bureaucracy adding to their workload.

I have asked the Diabetic nurse at my GP in Gtr Manchester yet again for the Libre 2 and been told that she won’t/can’t recommend/refer me for this as I am well controlled. I have been diabetic for nearly 40 years. My finger tips are scarred from the constant testing. I am very controlled which I’m informed is my downfall! I live in my own, work part time and have my 1 of my 2 young granddaughters each day to care for. It worries me. I have had the odd early morning low which can leave me unsteady on my feet for some time. I keep fit, look after myself and diet strictly but want my son to have notice of lows to help. I’m almost 65 and now feel I need some extra support. Reading this post will help me hopefully to fight this now. Fingers crossed. Surely it’s cost effective rather than me being found unconscious and having to be hospitalised?

Libre should be on prescription as you‘re type 1, well controlled or not

Ask them to refer you to a diabetes specialist at hospital for their opinion on it
