Hi everyone,

I have just been told that I am going to have to start medication for T2 along with changing my lifestyle and it has knocked me for six. I cannot take Metformin because of family history of tummy troubles, and I feel really scared about the changes I am going to have to make.

I have a busy job and am not very disciplined about eating regularly, plus I really like to go out for a drink occasionally but feel that everything will have to change so dramatically now.

Any positive suggestions on how I can cope with this would be gratefully received.

How long of you been T2 and trying to control with diet? I'm not a regular eater, I often miss meals but I do try to ensure that my meals are low carb. I still go out to eat and drink and control my blood sugar. Wine or shorts but no beer as beer has carbs!!

Exercise can also help. I find after doing an hour of pilates that my bg is below 5.

Welcome to the club. I think most of us can well remember that "freaking out" feeling when we were first diagnosed but you have done a really important thing in coming onto this forum; you are amongst friends who all have our ups and downs and are here to help and support each other. If you haven't already done so, have a look through the links at the top of this Newbie section, loads of good advice to get you started and someone will always try to help with the specific questions you will have in the coming weeks. I'm fortunate in that I tolerate Metformin fairly well but there are several other medications and I am sure information will be forthcoming from a fellow T2 on the forum. Are you testing your BG at home? Most of us use the SD CodeFree as the strips are fairly inexpensive. Let us know how you get on and don't be shy about asking questions.

Welcome.🙂

Metformin is hardly going to help you cope with diabetes - so not being able to take it doesn't seem like a great problem. I tried to take it and it made me really ill, along with a statin, and I am far better off without it.
On a low carb diet I have normal blood glucose and feel so much better, have lost weight and regained energy.
I used a meter at first to ensure that I knew how much and what I could eat, but after a few months could see that I had got it right and so reduced the frequency of tests to just times when I needed to know how I was doing.
Eating low carb is a powerful tool to control blood glucose and many people do not require medication when using it. If you are pushed into taking a glucose lowering drug then you will need to be careful as you can easily go too low when the two are combined.

Welcome 🙂
