I developed a foot ulcer a while back and been getting treatment ever since.

I’ve started doing extra dressings myself at home in between been seen weekly in a clinic on their advice and using the stuff they provide me with.

I’ve noticed that the side of my foot has a weird shape developing, bunion maybe?

If I posted a few pictures would someone have a look?

I know you can’t offer medical advice but thought someone might comment generally.

Due back in clinic Wednesday morning.

They said if I have concerns anytime between appointments to call but not sure if I should tomorrow or just wait until clinic the following day.

Hello @MarkGeordie ,

I am so sorry to hear about your foot ulcer. It may be best to send those images to your GP for further clarification/help.

Call them asap @MarkGeordie I’m sure they’d rather answer your concerns now and it be nothing than have you wait till your appointment and find it’s something that needs attention.

Please phone them. Wishing you the best.

Hi @MarkGeordie

As said above please call for an urgent appointment. Change in the shape of a foot along with any ulcer, warmth, infection can be the start of Charcot foot. I hope it isn't but please get it checked out. Finding a new bony lump along the edge of your foot is how it starts to develop with the bones of the foot shifting. Wishing you well

Symptoms of Charcot foot

The signs and symptoms of Charcot foot may include:

  • swelling
  • warmth – the affected foot feels warmer than the other
  • change in foot colour
  • change in foot shape.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your feet, take the weight off that foot immediately and talk to your doctor, footcare team or local health service for more information and advice.

Thanks everyone. Didn’t actually get too far with it. GP was very uninterested and insisted the diabetic foot clinic only dealt with it.

By the time I actually got through on their number as it was either engaged or switched off that I managed to get a call back, but because I am there tomorrow morning at 9.15am there was nothing they could do as had no more space.

Oh well.

Seems like this could be the case.

Diabetic foot clinic took a look, they also noted the temperature of the foot is 2 degrees more than the other foot and is warm to touch.

Sent me along for X-rays, they took about 5 in various positions.

I was already wearing a boot cast for the ulcer so advised to keep using that but rest as much as I can and elevate the foot.

If anything comes up on X-ray they will call me.

Mentioned a full lower leg cast up to knee possibly.

Back on Tuesday.

Im hoping no news is good news as they haven’t contacted me yet, but then I’m not sure how long it will take to get the X-rays looked over or what priority they would be given.

I read online sometimes in the early stages X-rays don’t always pick up on changes to bone structure etc.

Still looks misshaped though and I have pain on the same side of my foot up to my ankle.

No swelling though.

The initial stages of Charcot foot aren't always apparent on XRay - I was diagnosed with a sprain after an XRay and was told everything was ok but 24 hours later my foot structure and arch collapsed.

If you have a noticeable change in foot shape then hopefully the XRays will show what is happening to your foot.

If it is a Charcot you should NOT be walking or putting any weight on your foot, cast or no cast. I have 2 chariots and this is the advice I was given. On crutches for 22 months for each ankle. The first Charcot was misdiagnosed by 4 HCP's and I have been left disabled with a deformed foot so please I beg you take care.

Thanks for that.

However, I haven’t been given any crutches etc. and hard not to walk about when I live alone and have no family near by.

If it does turn out to be that and they properly cast it they best provide crutches then.

Fingers crossed you get some clarity and some better support @MarkGeordie

Must be very worrying for you :(

I’m back in clinic in the morning at 9.15 so hopefully get some more answers.

Still no contact re X-rays so I will ask what they showed if anything this time round.

Good luck for tomorrow. Really hope it isn't Charcot and they can fix your ulcer up and get it healed quickly.
I'm sure you know that managing your BG levels well at this time is even more important than ever.
Let us know how you get on. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you. (((HUGS)))

Hope all goes well for you in the morning.

I went this morning. Saw specialist podiatrist. She said nothing was reported on X-rays.

She’s referring it to orthopaedics to look at especially as I’m in pain still.

Weekly dressing changes and to continue with removable boot.

My foot at the side is still mis-shaped though.

Well I suppose at least there is still some hope it isn't Charcot and you are getting a referral.
How is the ulcer coming along? Really hope you are winning the battle with that.

Yeah I’m hoping the referral will confirm it’s hopefully not.

It’s healing nicely, they are pleased, it’s in an awkward position you see, and they keep saying it needs to close up fully.

Back in the foot clinic tomorrow. My foot is very sore, painful and achy at the moment.

Orthopaedics were sent my X-rays and info and they have confirmed they want to see me in outpatients on 5th October.
