Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and doctors haven't really told me foods I cant eat my education training isn't until 23rd can someone please help me with a list of foods I should be eating

Welcome @suelowe73 🙂 Are you on any medication for the diabetes? And do you know what your HbA1C was?

Ok, so a good starting place is to look at an average day’s food for you pre-diagnosis and then look to see where you can reduce the carbs across the day. So, for example, if you used to have 2 Weetabix, milk and a slice of toast and jam, you could change that to just one slice of toast and a poached egg or two. You’re basically aiming to cut down on carbs - all carbs not just sugar - and increase green veg and salads to fill the gap. You can also have a bit of extra protein and some healthy fats.

Foods to watch out for are obviously things like sugary drinks, fruit juices, cakes, tropical fruit (higher in carbs), etc. Lower carb fruits are berries.

Thankyou very much. I have changed to wholegrain bread and rolls, have started eating more fruit just get stuck on what to snack on as I am a snacker so struggling with that and finding myself not eating anywhere near enough. Inget confused what I csn have for dinners etc

Wholegrain breads are better for general health than white but they still have similar amounts of carbs so you need to check the labels (some bread has a fair few more carbs per slice than others) and keep your portion size small. Remember, it’s the carbs you need to watch - even healthy carbs like fruit and wholegrains.

For snacks, try things like celery sticks dipped in cream cheese, or a Babybel, or a handful of nuts, or even a slice of cold meat if you have it.

Thankyou very much for your help I appreciate it do you know any good websites with further information I can look through

Have a look at this link which has some low carb meal plans to suit various tastes and budgets. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
You probably can't go wrong with keeping your carb intake to no more than 130g per day.
It is better to snack if you really need to on low or zero carb foods rather than foods which are high carb, be careful with fruit as most is quite high carb, the lowest is berries which if you have with full fat Greek yoghurt make a good snack, breakfast or desert.
Meals based on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy with veg and salads but with very small portions of high carb foods like potatoes, rice, pasta. bread and cutting out cakes, biscuits unless home made low carb ones and sugary drinks including fruit juice.

I always keep hard boiled eggs, cheese, cold meat, toasted almonds, plain yogurt, and salad ingredients handy for snacking -half an apple or pear cut in wedges and some sticks of cheese are surprisingly filling. You can also make any quiche recipe without a crust if you have a decent non stick baking tin or line the base with parchment, freezes well and can have hot or cold. Whatever you snack on, put it on a plate and sit down to eat it. Hope that helps.
