Thank you everyone for your well wishes!

Update on me: I've not really had time to process what happened as it all happened VERY quickly.

8/9ish my levels were 13... did half correction dose... 9:30 took half my basal stupidly but I was worried... 1ish I was 18mmol... 3am I was 24mmol so I did another half correction dose but forced myself to stay awake as I didn't want to sleep waiting on a correction dose to work if that makes sense... 5am my meter read HI so I forced myself to go wee and my ketones were +++ but I didn't risk it and rang 111. Nurse rang me back within 10 minutes to say she's ringing an ambulance as there's a possibility I'm going into DKA.

The paramedics meter read 29mmol. He did my blood ketones too and told me they were 2.4 I think I can't remember I just remember panicking.

I did explain to the nurses when I was admitted to the ward that this is the first time I've been seriously poorly since being on insulin and I kept apologising lol! They have been very good. I'm still on an IV sliding scale, IV saline and regular paracetamol to bring down my temp probably caused by my illness. Hopefully going home before tea time.

I feel really stupid because I did mostly follow the sick day rules but I was too cautious to give myself a high correction dose. I really don't think the 3u I gave myself did ANYTHING especially like Sue pointed out, being higher causes insulin resistance too! I do feel like I've wasted NHS time being here but I'm very grateful they acted so quickly. I'm feeling much better, apart from the throat but I've also had penicillin prescribed as it IS tonsillitis. At least I've definitely learnt my lesson and I need to be more aggressive with correction doses. It's really scared me how quick DKA can happen...

Oh no Rosie so sorry to hear this, take it easy, rest up and give yourself time to recover, I hope you get home soon and really hope you get better soon, take care hun xx

Thank you both. I just can't wait to get home and get my pj's on. Hospital brews never taste as good. Definitely use cheap tea bags!

Nope def not stupid, more than likely confused due to your high temp and infection. I would suspect the main problem was the half dose for your basal in the end. Oh and no you haven't wasted the NHS time or money so don't even go down that route.

Pleased you are feeling better and hopefully home this evening.

Only just caught up on this thread - so sorry to hear you've been going through the mill Rosiecarmel - sending masses of get well (((((hugs)))) and hope you begin to feel better soon - there's nothing like your own home comforts to aid recovery - hope you're discharged soon Rosie. Take care x

Glad you have got treatment for your throat and hope the sliding scale makes you feel better soon.
Cyber hug from me.

Wow, Rosie. As you say, quite a lot to process! The key take home message for sick day rules is NEVER REDUCE YOUR BASAL. Dealing with the underlying infection is also vital, which means antibiotics are often needed for bacterial infections, although obviously useless for viral. Getting blood glucose levels under control helps you feel better, as well as giving your body the best chance of defeating infection and not helping the infectious agent.

Phew! Glad you're still here mate! That's all that matters really - esp that you're now getting the necessary ABs to sort it.

It really is scary finding out how viciously something as simple as tonsillitis attacks one's BG, ain't it?

Still - all part of the learning curve, Rosie! {{Hugs}}

We done for getting the help you needed. Hope you get home soon and rest.

Really sorry to hear you've been so poorly, sending you (((hugs))) and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hope you're home and much better soon Rosie. A scary episode for you! :(

Oh what an awful time you've had Rosie. So glad you're in the mend and wish you a speedy recovery xx

Sorry to hear your in hospital but glad you are and getting the right treatment.

I've just seen this - how dreadful for you, Rosie! Sending lots of good wishes and {{{hugs}}} for a speedy recovery xx

Glad you're getting sorted out, it's always a tightrope, trying not to go to high, trying not to go too low, (esp if you live on your own) Sometimes your body just won't play ball, which is why hospitals are there!

Rosiecarmel I'm so sorry to hear this and I completely understand the decisions that you made. I hope you are now home or will be home soon x

I am sorry you are feeling poorly and ended up in hospital due to levels. Hope you get home and better soon. sending hugs

Just caught up on this Rosie.
I hope that you are home with a good cuppa and feeling a lot better.

It might be worth seeing DSN before you leave any going through sick day rules with them.
I rewrote mine into a flow chart so that I do not have to think when ill and I can just do as it says.
