Following sick day rules but...

Little update on me: the penicillin has done wonders. I still feel a little lethargic but the swelling of my throat and fever etc have all but disappeared! My glucose levels are also behaving themselves too. I am seeing the diabetic nurse at the surgery to thoroughly go through the sick day rules. I did understand them but paired with the fever, infection and general fear of hypos I made some silly mistakes ie halving my basal. I'm going to write it down in big simple bullet points so next time I know what to do.

I can't believe DKA can happen so quickly, it seriously shook me up for a few days. I'm also in the process of explaining DKA and sick day rules to my friends so they understand a bit better too

That's a serious lesson to learn, Rosie. DKA can be on you in a flash, with everything going tits up with exponential speed. You now know never ever reduce your basal, and never be afraid of correcting. But I'm so pleased you are still around to learn the lesson- DKA is a life threatening condition, specially if you live on your own. Welcome back🙂

Luckily I haven't had any illness over the past year so although I know the rules, it will be new to me if (when) I have to put it all into practice. A cautionary tale indeed!

Since I have been diabetic I've had thrush a number of times and cystitis about twice, neither of which raised your temp noticeably, and I had proper flu once about 20 years ago but other than that I've never been 'ill'. Mind you, before I was diagnosed I was very rarely 'ill' either. hence - as they hadn't invented basal bolus when I had flu - I've never had to know about Sick Day Rules let alone use them. It was with amazement I found people talking of such things. Never had them discussed with me, never been suggested I might like to have the means to test ketones - or anything like that.

Hi glad to know you are getting treatment, as everyone else says when you get home, relax. I was admitted with DKA about 6 weeks ago, and it took me about 3 weeks for the lethargy to go, my DSN said that was normal considering what my body had gone through so bear that in mind, they don't keep you in hospital long but it takes a little while to recover x
