Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been T2D for 10 years. To control my diabetes I started with Metformin and unfortunately my body could not tolerate it as constant running to toilet. After couple of months hoping it would settle it was changed to SR Metformin and all was basically ok. I have these past 6 months having problems again with running to toilet and not a lot of control. Had various tests including 2 bowel scanning tests.....all normal. The practice nurse at my GP practice suggested today that it may be I have become intolerant with the SR Metformin suggested I stop taking it for 2-3 weeks to see if my bowels settle down. If not I resume taking it. If it settles down I will be given an alternative to Metformin. I am also on 40mg of Gliciazide which I’ve to continue to take. Concerned about my BG levels rising and if this will do my diabetes any harm. Any thoughts as I’m a bit concerned.

Are you eating a low carb diet and still seeing your levels rise?

Hi. Welcome to the forum @Scottie Lottie . That sounds horrible. Has the brand of Metformin sr changed for the one you are used to as this can make a difference.

Don’t worry about temporarily stop taking Metformin as it not only takes time to build up in ones system it also takes time to leave it.
Apologies if you already know that his.
It also doesn’t work like Gliclazide, Metformin makes us more sensitive to insulin whether it’s home brew or not and also helps stop our liver putting out too much glucose.
So a brief time off it won’t do any harm.
Their are plenty of alternative diabetes meds, so don’t worry about that side if things.

Thank you so much for that information and it has been reassuring. My meds haven’t changed for a number of years so got a bit anxious stopping Metformin suddenly. Feel more settled.

Hi @Scottie Lottie I used to take Metformin and it was as though my body got used to it. I got to the point where any food would go straight through me. I would go out and have to suss out where the loos were!
I stopped taking it and was put on something else and was fine, apart from putting on weight! So I would seriously ask to change your prescription.
That’s what has happened to me these past months. It’s so bad during this lockdown as shops, parks etc have no access to toilets. Hopefully if it the metformin is the cause I’ll get and alternative. I thought I was only one with this issue. Thank you so much for telling me about your experience so similar to mine. It has relieved my anxiety.

Hi. Metformin never does a lot for BS but can be stopped and started without concern. You may have to rely more on the the low-carb diet.
