Oooh I didn't get offered Securon LOL - and statins caused me mental health problems. I am FIRMLY of the opinion that they don't prevent heart attacks unless you've already got CVD. But anyway - whatever I die of, even hardening of my arteries which I self inflict by smoking for 50+ years - I'd prefer it not to be without my marbles thanks!

I was prescribed statins but found I couldn't tolerate them - nausea & vomiting so my GP withdrew them - trying to reduce cholesterol with diet - won't know how well I've done til i have bloods taken fairly soon - and me too - want to keep my marbles as long as I can tho have to say I've had a few 'senior moments' of late LOL !!!

Very odd indeed to do that Phil - how strange.

Although, you know - the effect of drugs can sort of, wear off sometimes - and there are a lot of BP alternatives that might work better (or worse LOL) than whatever you take at the moment. Will be interesting to see whether just increasing the doses of whatever, does the trick. Hope so! having spent 18 months trying to get off Losartan we didn't find anything else that reduced my BP or didn't have horrific side effects so they've resigned themselves to my still taking Losartan and my having wavering blood sodium levels. (It's never horrifically high - or at least it hasn't been so far - said she clutching the ash desk under the keyboard LOL)

@Browser - reducing carb consumption often has the nice side effect of reducing cholesterol levels - so it can be doubly beneficial to do so for diabetics - or indeed, anyone else !
Hi my BP medication is Ramipril, it started at 0.25mg, now upped to 0.50mg

The ACE inhibitors are sposed to be more protective of other bits of us - kidneys i think - than other BP drug types, so they are the first choice for diabetics anyway - so you're on the right thing for starters, according to the guidelines. As I said, I hope they do the trick.

It remains though that usually ones BP only gradually creeps up as we age, or don't take so much exercise, or put on weight, whatever - unless eg we turned a corner and came face to face with a herd of stampeding buffalo in which case, our BP returns to normal after they've passed and missed us. So the question is still Oooh, why the heck has this happened?

Hi PhilG,
My diabetes diagnosis was made while I was at the doc. for high BP problems. My systolic number was wavering anywhere between 130 and 190. I'm on one tablet Lisinopril 10 mg. It seems to be working ok but not ideal and I'm getting to grips with my diabetes with Metformin and low carb diet. I'm really interested in how you got your cholesterol down as my D nurse wants me to start on statins which I'm reluctant to do.

Hi BP medication is Ramipril now upped to 0.50mg once a day. Regarding reducing my cholesterol, it seem to be just down to my change of diet. Since my T2D diagnosis in November last year I totally changed my diet. No sugar , cakes, bisikete sweets or pop etc. ovissailey all potatoes are now new potatoes only, and not very many, pasta and rice are all now brown, lots of salad, and lots of fruit and nuts, and seeds, (I know lots of people on hear say fruit and nuts are high in sugar, and fats) well it works for me. And little to no junk food, or ready meals, a good bit of (fresh) fish. bread is now all the seeded whole grain type

Hi PhilG, Sorry that I hadn't noticed earlier that you had replied to my question about cholesterol. That's great that you have managed to lower it through healthy eating. I had my six week since diagnosis meeting with the D nurse and she was very pleased with my progress. We discussed my cholesterol in greater detail and, having lost one stone exactly, the issue of statins has been put on the back burner till my next HbA1c. Like you, I have more or less cut out pasta, rice, potatoes and white bread. I take fruit and nuts in moderation and allow myself the occasional small treat of 'very' dark chocolate which seems to behave itself. I've found good replacements for a lot of the banished food and never feel too hungry or deprived of food enjoyment. On the BP issue, ( I take Amlodipine and not Lisinopril as I said earlier) things seem to be improving and my readings are back to reasonable normality. I hope you get your BP sorted out soon.

Hi, I'll need to look at the very dark chocolate, sounds interesting. lol.
.

I'm reading Doctoring Data and I get the impression we might as well put all the statins in the bin!
