Well felt really drowsy and a little headache this morning, first BG reading was 18.1 after breakfast it was 22.5 and according to ketostix i am showing slight traces of ketones in my wee.

Not quite sure what to do except to keep drinking fluids, keep up with my injections like i have been told and hope they come down soon and keep checking my wee :(

Still eating as normal just have got no energy this morning and the diabetes centre is shut at weekends so can't even let my diabetes nurse know.

It could just be fasting ketones as even non diabetics can have ketones if they haven't eaten for a prolonged period.

Saying that keep and eye on things, and read the leaflet that came with the strips it will give you instructions on what to do and when to contact a Dr.

One thing to remember is that the ketone levels in the urine are a reflection of a couple of hours back.

Keep drinking fluids (dehydration can cause headaches) - but if you start feeling like you were before you were admitted to hospital with dka get someone to take you to the hospital.

Ok I would definitely ring NHS direct - the number is 0845 4647 they are really helpful and lovely so please don't be afraid to ring them. I would call them straight away and hopefully they'll get you sorted.

Also the ketones in your wee are something like 4 hours old so its possible that your ketones are higher than your readings. If you still have the infection in your arm it could well be because of that - this has happened to me before. Please ring the NHS direct, they are really good I promise 🙂

I really didn't want to phone and end up going back in i know i feel tired, my headache isnt as bad as before, my tongue has got that ickyness to it again that i had before. I had eaten my breakfast before i checked my ketone levels.

Is it worth waiting to see how i go over dinner and then checking again and if its still showing traces or anything like that then ring the hospital???

if i ring the hospital with ketones in my wee is there a chance i'll have to go back in :(

As I posted earlier - its common to have trace ketones in the morning.

However, as you have not been well and you still have not managed to get your levels under control you need to keep an eye things. The patient information with the strips will give you information as to when to contact a Dr - read that. I think but can't remember that it tells you what symptoms to look out for.

Try not to get stressed (easier said than done as it could push up your blood sugar).

what are Ketones

I keep readig about this what are they?

I know it's scary in hospital and you have had such an awful time recently but if you ring now then you might have to go in, but only for a short while, but if you leave it too long you'll end up in there for longer. You might not have to go in at all, but you do need to get yourself checked out. I promise you this is the best way, it's better to only be in for a day or so than to be in for weeks (like I was) and it means you'll end up feeling better sooner 🙂 You'll be ok 🙂

Sorry but ketones in your urine isn't common or particularly normal first thing in the morning, if you'll none diabetic and dieting or haven't eaten for a long while it means that the body is using fat for fuel and not particularly harmful..

But if you'll diabetic with raised bg's then it's a sign that you are struggling and needs to be taken seriously, to avoid DKA you need to drink plenty of fluids and start sick days rules to try to get your bg's back near to the normal range..

Rose, you need to phone somebody up, to get advice about using your quick acting insulin to correct your BG levels... Keep drinking plenty of fluids, keep checking your BG and Ketones around every 2 hours..

From what you'll saying you are low level DKA and if you avoid taking action then this can change very quickly into full blown DkA, as the moment it's likely somebody will give you advice how to do correcting injection/sick day rules with you quick acting insulin or perhaps say pop down to A&E who can help and monitor you to get your levels down out of danger area... It's far better to spend several hours in hospital or even overnight to get sorted than avoiding it all, landing yourself being blue lighted into A&E then staying goodness how long until you well again..

Make the phone call..

I agree with Ellie it's really important you get advice quickly. I know this because I have been in hospital with DKA myself over 30 times, its so important to get advice earlier on rather than wait until you get really sick.

Mummyrose said she had trace ketones which is why given her BMs I suggested she read the Patient Information leaflet for the ketostix which tell you to test every couple of hours and what warning symptoms to look for.

Personally I think we should be prescribed with test strips that allow us to check the ph of urine, as that would give an indication as to whether things are likely to need intervention.

Mummyrose - what I would suggest is that you get hold of a meter that can test your blood for ketones as that gives you a better idea of what is going on, and speak to your team about sick day rules. ( PS I mean this in addition to what you ared doing now)

Mummyrose if you look in - can you tell us how the day has gone?

Well everyone i waited to see what happened my blood sugars been the lowest since i came out was 9.1 before tea 10.9 after tea and has stayed level, been drinking loads of water to flush the ketones out and now no traces in my urine. My energy level has slowly picked up throughoutthe day although the niggly headache has beenon and off.

Thank you everyone i think i will keep a close eye on it over the next few days and make sure everything stays under control. Its been a real rollercoaster ride!!!

Well done Mummyrose I'm really chuffed for you! Thats great news I'm really glad you're feeling better :D

Pleased to hear that you are feeling a lot better.

Are you keeping a diary of all that has been happening so that you can speak with your DSN next week and see if they can suggest any changes ?

Excellent news MummyRose. Sometimes the ketones can creep in but as long as you test, test, test and keep checking they're not rising, along with trying to bring the BGs down, you should be ok.🙂

I have a diary i have written down ALL my BG readings ALL my injections when i have phoned when i have had traces of ketones when i have been to hospital when i've been to doctors etc etc...i have been tracking just about everything, thought it was the best thing to do seen as i was newly diagnosed that way we can see when my bg is spiking and when its at its best etc.

It's the best thing MR. You'll be getting a gold star at the clinic ! :D

That's sounds very helpful. I do hope things settle for you soon. Has the swelling in your arm subsided yet ? Love your current signature - seems very apt for all you are going through.

The swelling and pain is almost gone from my arm. I think its a quote from Buddha lol i just really liked it.

I'm really happy today my bg started off high at 18.1, then 22.5 but it started dropping to 14.6 then 16.3 then 9.8 then 10.9 then 8.6 best readings so far since being released from hospital never really had more than two readings in a day below 15. Going to see if it carries on for the next few days then kick start my excercise again so im not trying to do too much at once :D
