managed to speak to my doctors this morning mainly regarding the side effects but at the same time explained about taking readings and not one was showing normal.

as a last resort they are wanting me to take it before bedtime but to be honest don't think they are holding much breath of it working and have been told that in the end the diabetes needs to be brought back under some control or problems will set in.

there are other medications which they can try so lets hope they find something.

i think i am with you on this drummer regarding the metformin not been so good, it is cheap so that is why they prescribe it over anything else.

i did a check around the web last night and apparently the side effect symptoms i have been getting seem to be quite common resulting in many people not been able to take it and also the other where the metformin is not doing the job it is intended to do.

just glad i bought a meter which is good enough prove to me that it isn't even touching the diabetes in the end this is what the metformin is designed for or should be.

It is only the first option it is not the only one.

after just been diagnosed with T2 and starting meds which had to be changed due to problems i got my new meter today and this morning did a finger prick test waited for the result only to find it was sitting just short of 10

before anyone jumps in and thinks i was eating carbs for breakfast absolute no carbs in sight and this also questions the doctors blood tests also showing abnormal levels, each was done with little or no nothing to eat which then questions what is going on to raise the glucose levels like this.

i am seeing my nurse shortly so will take the readings with me for further input as to what might be going on.

for the time been any input on here welcome although no mention of carbs as i didn't have any at the time of the blood tests and finger prick tests.
Is there a meter that we can use that measures hba1c please, if so where can I get one?

10 seems ok if its your first prick test, my first test was 15 or 17 (i can't remember) which is obviously a lot worse, and i hadn't eaten anything that day.

No Pauldogs,
The meter that the OP was talking about is a Blood Glucose (finger-prick) meter. For an Hba1C reading (giving a sort of average Blood Glucose over the last 3 months) a full blood sample needs to be withdrawn and sent to a lab for analysis.

This is mainly the case but some Hospital Clinics have machines that can do them in minutes.

As others have said - Not for home use, no.

Though various logging software (especially from continuous sensors) will attempt to estimate an HbA1c from a comprehensive spread of fingerstick or sensor values - but those are only estimates, not actual measurements.

Just to add to ed&d's comment. Meter's to measure HBA1c from a finger prick are advertised BUT they are expensive and will be about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Don't be taken in by their claims.

And (having had a quick google) some of the things advertised that look like they’re going to be an HbA1c meter just turn out to be a test tube and finger stabber for you to collect a blood sample and send it off to a lab somewhere.
