after just been diagnosed with T2 and starting meds which had to be changed due to problems i got my new meter today and this morning did a finger prick test waited for the result only to find it was sitting just short of 10

before anyone jumps in and thinks i was eating carbs for breakfast absolute no carbs in sight and this also questions the doctors blood tests also showing abnormal levels, each was done with little or no nothing to eat which then questions what is going on to raise the glucose levels like this.

i am seeing my nurse shortly so will take the readings with me for further input as to what might be going on.

for the time been any input on here welcome although no mention of carbs as i didn't have any at the time of the blood tests and finger prick tests.

Having just been diagnosed, a reading of 10 isn't a surprise. It's to be expected.
If you keep a food diary, along with a record of your levels, hopefully after a couple of weeks you'll start to see a pattern.

What did you have for breakfast and when did you take the reading relative to breakfast? I spiked from a waking reading of 5.6 to 9.0 two hrs after a cup of coffee with cream and a mushroom omelette this morning..... no significant carbs in that. Your liver can pump glucose out into your bloodstream and is more inclined to do so in the morning so that may be a factor or it may just be that you have such an accumulation of glucose in your blood stream that it will take time to come down with the medication and dietary changes.

When I first went to very low carb I was surprised to find spikes in my BG after meals. Then I was to,d that in the absence of carbs the body will use protein instead. Could this be anything to do with it.

Daft as it sounds could you have been a little anxious over doing your first finger prick test and the " fight or flight" mechanism kicked in causing your liver to dump more glucose into your blood.?
I find if I am worried about or don't want to do something on the morning of the event my readings are always higher than normal.
Just a thought.

Is your body used to getting a Carb based supper.... Even now, 9 months down the line and just gone into reversal, I get a liver dump around 3am.
I still cannot get the morning fasting reading below 6.7....mine was 12-19 at the start of my journey.
Good luck.. It takes a while to wade through the mire.

many thanks for the interesting responses esp about the accumulation and also dumping of glucose. i do have liver disease which may be one of the problems but at the same time it could be with only just starting the medication that it will take time to settle down.

in between now and seeing my nurse i will take a few readings to see what is going on, i did used to do finger prick tests years ago so am not really nervous of taking bloods, bit of a vampire person 🙂

Wish I could get my morning fasting reading under 7.00 it's always over 7.3 and that two years of low carbs, it's just the way things are.
Rest of the day under 6.0 before eating and below 7.00 two hours later, it's just the mornings that are the pain in the butt.!

did another test yesterday at a different time and was shocked to see i was having a hyper sitting around 12.7 the worry is how long all of this has been going on for as i went a long time without been diagnosed till a one of test showed some kind of problem going on and was then recently put on medication.

the worry without been on meds for such a long time is what damage has been done, sooner i see the nurse the better.

A 12 isn't really what I would consider a hyper (15+ would be my qualifier) and not too much to worry about but obviously you need to bring it down. I was getting readings in the 20's when I was first diagnosed. It should hopefully spur you on to reduce your carb intake though. Try having carbs just with your evening meal and avoiding them for the earlier part of the day. I find starchy foods like bread/potatoes/pasta etc spike my BG for 8-10hrs so if I have two consecutive meals containing those, one spike stacks on top of the other and I have no hope of coming down into the normal range. My body handles carbs better on an evening too, so avoiding them for breakfast and lunch makes the most sense. Try a kipper for breakfast or an omelette or a full English but no bread/toast or hash browns.

The first step to understanding whats going on is collecting the information. Judging the information (It's over 10 so I must be rubbish, or whatever) and labelling it is unhelpful.

When you've collected information (try after exercise, whatever exercise looks like for you) perhaps comes the issue of changing habits - identifying whay might be.most helpful - to improve things?

Good luck and be kind to you.

I don't know if this is any help but, I always do my finger pricks just after waking up and before eating and drinking.

If you have high blood glucose and it is not a response to eating carbs, then there is something else going on and your dr or nurse needs to know - though I found that if I did not eat some small amount of carbohydrates in a morning my blood glucose was higher - I assume thanks to my liver trying to be helpful.

well done over a week on metformin slow release with some minor side effects but nothing alarming.

also done a full week of testing of from been 12. something and sitting around 9.7 most of the time this dinner time i did a test and looks like the figures are coming down slowly was 9.3 which is better than what i have been getting.

problem is still stuck over 9.0 so some work to try and get it back in range.

could be that with going untreated for a long time that as someone said there could be a lot of glucose around or the other is dumping keeping it up still happy though that it is slightly down

Well done with the progress you are making. When are you testing to get those results? Are they 2 hours after eating? If so, what are your readings before you start the meal and what are you eating? It is a good idea to keep a food diary as well as recording your readings, so that you can see which foods are causing you particular problems with spiking your blood glucose levels.

basically was only doing the readings as randoms to see what is going on with the glucose levels not at specific times.

it is one thing having randoms and the 6 week done at the doctors but you can't see what is really going on till you get your own meter and with me not been so well previous to been diagnosed with other health issues on top this is a way to see how severe the levels are.

Hi, test just before you eat and then again 2 hrs later, you are looking for a raise of between 2-3, preferably 2.

Irregular eating and lack of eating can result in abnormal levels if you have been erratic in your eating pattern.

absolute terrific had a lay down after tea got up with bad tummy and sweating managed to do a test and yes over 12 again.

seems that the sr metformin is very good at giving bad side effects but not doing the job it is designed for and am not going to ask for it to be increased as this would only make the side effects worse.

when i see the nurse next week i am going to take my readings and see if it can be changed, the only other thing i can think of is that the t2 may be wrong.

this is like something is stopping the levels going down, doesn't seem to matter if i eat or not, if i was eating lots of carbs i could understand this but i am not.

oh well i feel a bad night coming up :(

Metformin doesn't drag glucose out of your system like some treatments - I got very little benefit from taking it for the first few weeks - it made me so ill l threw it away.
On a low carb diet - but with those numbers - I mean - call me suspicious, but my readings dropped so fast I stopped testing before meals after a very little time, I just tested after eating to see how I reacted. Over 10 was rare - only when testing one of the foods other people can eat (and I can't) did I see numbers so high.
