So this one is a bit weird, but..,

For several years now I have been following the antics of a YouTuber who goes by the name of Foodie Beauty.

Why? Mainly because she is an absolute car crash of a person and frankly it’s endlessly fascinating to watch someone go through life making preventable mistake after preventable mistake. Don’t feel bad for her btw - she is a truly terrible human (animal abuse, drugs, using people, constantly lying, grifting, faking being a Muslim to entrap an husband - the list goes on and on!) but that’s a looooooong story to go through. Textbook narcissist.

The other reason is that she is also a type 2 diabetic, and the way that she deals with it… well, it’s a spectacular disaster. She just will not take good advice (narcissists can’t) and her health is deteriorating rapidly. I do have sympathy for her health circumstances, but that runs somewhat dry when you see her binging 8000 calories in one day (yes really) and throwing full on tantrums about having to cut out her beloved fast food (she never will). There’s a point where you have to take personal responsibility for what goes in your mouth; she simply will not - it’s everyone else’s fault but hers. It blows my mind.

If you want to know how to deal with diabetes, watch Foodie Beauty and do the exact opposite to what she does.

Sounds crazy, but the daily dose of chaos with her is inspiring me to do better for myself. Is that a bad reflection on me? Probably! But, I guess when you’re trying to have a real impact on your health & lifestyle, sometimes someone showing you the pitfalls of not taking it seriously is a form of inspiration you should take. It’s an extreme way to remind myself why I am doing what I am doing, I guess. But, every day I can be proud that I am taking it seriously and that I will not end up that way she is going without a damn good fight!

I am not sure I could follow a YouTuber in that way but I do understand what you mean.
You may have heard of the DAFNE course for people with Type 1 diabetes.
I attended the course about 12 years after my diagnosis - there were people there who were only just diagnosed and those who had been living with diabetes for longer than I had.
After 12 years, I had worked out (and read) most of what was being taught (but attending was one of the hoops I had jump through to get access to an insulin pump). It was still a really valuable time - mostly due to the other people on the course.
Sorry, I am getting carried away with the back story.

I have been very lucky that after 12 years then and 21 years now, I have no complications from my diabetes.
Some of the other attendees on the course really helped. The woman my age who couldn't walk because of her neuropathy from limiting insulin to lose weight as a teenager, the young lad (I think he was 21) who was partially sighted because he wouldn't take his insulin when he went out with his mates, the guy who had to give up his job because he couldn't be bothered to count his carbs and kept getting it wrong, ..
The stories were incredibly sad and not that much different to some of the horror stories I had read but meeting these people made me realise how real complications were and it wasn't because people were stupid or self destructive. It is because diabetes can be hard and unrelenting. But it is worth trying to minimise the risks.

Gosh, i would have found that daphne course too depressing!

@Katetype2 if you can't be a good example you might end up as an awful warning.
It is sad to see people who have mental problems with food, particularly when the consequences can be so dire due to additional factors.

Absolutely. My hair dresser and I had a chat a couple of weeks back and she told me her dad almost died from a diabetes-related heart attack last year. Of course you see people’s sad stories here and on other forums too. It keeps me on track, which sounds cruel but I think most would say ‘please don’t end up like me if you can help it’.

Do you think foodiebeauty is actually like that or being like that for subs?

It’s genuinely frustrating, fascinating and revealing to watch. I pick bits out of it and think ‘yeah… I was doing that’, or ‘I was heading that way’.

Each to their own but can't see why anyone want to give her pleasure of views/clicks to her youtube chanel, that is what she wants playing up to a audience.

Life is far to short to fill your time with such negativity, despite reasons that you've already stated @Katetype2

@Katetype2 my cousins lovely wife who was 5 days younger than me died of a diabetes related heartattack a year ago. I assumed my blood test for my blood pressure review was tested for diabetes. When I found out I hadn't been tested for more than a decade I asked for a test and was 69 bg. This was four months after her death. I'd been aware of neuropathy and eye sight problems for type 2 and ultimately amputations but until Chris died I had no idea it happened. For me it keeps me more or less in control and has caused me to lose most of my post menopausal weight ( more to go) which i should have done years ago.

I say get the inspiration from whereever you can...... if it helps then great.
Some people are just like that, I used to work with someone who had a major drama happening every day and it was always someone else's fault.
You try to be sympathetic, help, offer advice, etc, but.... after a while you do start to think, maybe its just them?

I know what you mean. Believe me, it’s just entertainment at the end of the day. And I don’t directly watch her on her own channel - but through reaction channels. I find it more entertaining than most regular TV so it’s my relaxation time. I appreciate that not everyone would see it that way.

Ah I’m sorry for your loss. I lost one of my closest friends to alcoholism a couple of years ago and it completely changed my drinking habits. It’s sad that it sometimes takes a tragedy to make us see the light.

I've had a watch. Latest vid about reducing calories and eating healthier, all whilst eating a egg mcmuffin. To me the lady seems honest in what she claims. I just think she doesn't realise (knows but in denial). She discusses the advice doctors are saying to her, like if you really can't make any meaningful changes to your diet and way of life, just make better choices like eat the McDonald's but the lower calorie version (skip the cheese slice).

If she is doing this as a wind up, she doesn't let on. She seems to genuinely believe what she says.

I took a look earlier. Sat in her car after a drive through with a Starbucks then a Mickey Dee in a car park? (Watching the sun come up.) Good acoustics in a car if recording, but it felt like a “confession booth” on wheels.

Ah this is all part of a cycle she keeps repeating. She knows. She just doesn’t want to try. It’s a long, complicated history with a lot of lore with her!
