Had my long awaited appt today unfortunately after having to wait 6 weeks for it the receptionist didn't book a long enough appt so I've to go back on the 6th Nov to Finish off . We did however have a good chat and she took some blood to check my liver before starting some medication . She has also referred me to a dietician and an education programme which is good and she said she is going to take some more bloods on the 6 th . Just like to say I was so glad to have this forum while waiting for the appt to come around so thanks for all the helpful advice

Glad you got at least part of your long waited for appointment, Susie. Referrals sound useful, too.

Hi. I always get my bloods done 2 weeks before my appointment so the DN has the results available to discuss. Take care with the dietician as some still push the Eat Well Guide (high carbs) stuff which will make your diabetes worse. Fortunately some are now well aware that reducing the carbs is important in controlling blood sugar and weight

Good to hear your appointment was positive Susie...shame you didn't get enough time today...might be an idea to confirm your next appointment is long enough to cover all you need to with the DSN...has she booked you on the DESMOND course?...most of them are self referral....I suppose on a positive note while waiting for the course & the follow up appointment...you can concentrate on your management...demonstrate your progress.

Thanks Dave I will remember that DSN touched on that she seemed open minded about it but of course they are bound by NHS guidelines aren't they

The nurse made the appt herself for me so hopefully won't get same problem. She took blood today for liver function as she said she wanted to check this before giving me medication so like u say it gives me two weeks to try and makes some progress.

Susie...you'd be surprised at the progress you can make in two weeks...the progress you've made so far...fortunately managing our diabetes is one condition we can have control of...with changes to our lifestyles...even minor adjustments are beneficial... good luck...hope the follow appointment up goes well.

Bubbsie how do you go about applying for the Desmond course the one DSN has referred me for is one run by sirrona care in South Gloss so I'm not really holding my breath on how long I have to wait

Not all areas offer the same courses many are there own versions with many different names.

I think it depends on the area as @grovesy says Susie...also the number of applicants...nothing to stop you from asking the DSN roughly how long does she think the referral may be...or you could even contact the course the organisers...explain you are waiting to be referred...they could give you an indication of the waiting period.

Cheers I will do that

Good luck...by the time you get on the course...likely you'll know a fair bit about your diabetes...how best to manage it...can ask relevant & pertinent questions...share how you manage with the others there...compare what you've learned with what you're advised...it all adds up Susie
