Finally I have insulin!

I’ve got the Humulin 1, seems an odd choice then when they’re fretting about me having hypos. Slightly mollified by me hoicking out a pot of jelly babies and 2 mini packs of biscuits from the depths of my bag. I like to be prepared 🙂

It seems odd to give you basal rather than bolus, when they think you're type 2 (and therefore producing your own background insulin), and it's clearly eating carbs which is spiking your blood sugar - but at least it's a step in the right direction.

The idea is that if I take it first thing at the same time as the steroids, it will catch the rise they cause. Hopefully it will work, fingers crossed.

I’ve made my decision, I’m going to make a Bakewell tart, because they’re a huge favourite and you can’t beat a warm homemade Bakewell, fresh out of the oven. Probably custard will be involved <drool>

Well done your daughter, at long last. Hopefully things will improve for you now, I would go for the eclairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the gateaux. :D
Ted if I had my way I’d be diving into a swimming pool full of carborific deliciousness :D

I don’t think my meagre 4 units will be man enough for that, so it’s a slice of Bakewell, and I’ll freeze the rest.

They started me out on Basal 20 units with Gliclazide, I was full of infection at the time and in hospital , they also prescribed Novorapid to use only for corrections if my BG rose to 15 which it did easily .
Before putting me on Basal my BG was around 22
Now I am on MDI .
I’m now down to 4.5 units of basal , what I am trying to say is that they seem to be starting you off very conservatively. It would be wise to keep in close contact with your nurse/ gp to help you make the necessary adjustment to your doses.

Enjoy your slice of homemade Bakewell , I am drooling already 🙂

How quickly do the steroids start to increase your BG, Madeline? And how long does the peak continue to rise?

I take them at 7am, and BG starts to rise mid morning, around 10ish. It will carry on rising, and peaks mid to late afternoon, then naturally starts to drop off, with another peak after dinner unless I have zero carbs. Any carbs eaten during the day will up the BG by at least 6mmol.

Oh and both Metformin and Gliclazide have absolutely zero effect - as in I can’t when tell when I stopped the Gliclazide and neither could the consultant.

One thing did really concern me. I really couldn’t make him understand that the reason my last HbA1C was so much better was because I was eating virtually no carbs at the time, and was also on minimal steroids (10mg a day maintenance dose). I just couldn’t get him to see that it was an anomaly for me; he couldn’t seem to get past me only being on the shakes for one month of that period. That’s when daughter stepped in. His English isn’t great tbh, and I have zero confidence in him, which feeds into my lack of confidence with the nurse because she just agrees with him, and they both have this insulin/fat thing going.

I’m so pleased to hear this. It’s been a while coming. How are you getting on with it?

Yep, insulin causes weight gain to the extent that last time I stood on the scales I was 7 stone 13 and wondering how I was going to get back over 8 again ... maybe all the slim type 1s on the forum should pm you our photos for you to take to show them the effects of insulin on body weight next time you go in ... 🙄

I have to wait for my GP to write the prescription, and for it to be delivered by the pharmacy, so I’m guessing Tuesday/Wednesday at the earliest. Meanwhile it’s zero carbs, and that Bakewell is fair screaming at me.

The insulin thing is utterly ridiculous, Liv pretty much destroyed that in 2 minutes by pointing out that the effect of Gliclazide was to stimulate beta cells to produce more insulin, so what was the difference between that and prescribed insulin, and surely if insulin made people fat then everyone would be fat. It was quite funny in an irritating sort of way, and I’m starting to think she should become a lawyer rather than go to med school.

She’s a hell of a person to have onside. I might start hiring her out for a small fee.

The 'Like' was for the Hiring out comment. She'd make a fortune! Hope you get commission!
I should, shouldn’t I. I wonder what a reasonable fee would be? £50? Not enough/too much? Maybe a sliding scale.

mmmm - if she's worth anything Madeline - it's more than that, surely?

Well obviously I’m biased, and would personally add a nought or two on the end, but I’m trying not to appear greedy :D

Madeline I’m so pleased that you’re getting the insulin and I hope that it works well for you.

Well, it’s been a while, things got a bit much for me so I came off the t’internets for a bit, but I missed your ugly old mugs so like the proverbial bad penny, I’M BAAAACK.

Was funny reading this back, dear god they were (still are) useless! I actually lost weight after going on insulin, as I could eat correctly, so boo sucks to nursie.

How are you all, you lovely little internet sprites?
