Hi everyone,
I’d like to ask a question about fibre. I’ve recently bought Schneider Brot’s Veggie-Rye Bread. 1 slice has 9.7g of carbs, of which 7.4 is dietary fibre. As I understand dietary fibre is not digestible, can I take 7.4 from 9.7, making 1 slice just 2.3g of carbs, or am I being too optimistic? Many thanks.

Are you sure the 7.4g fibre is listed as "of which"?
In the UK, typically, fibre is not included in the carbs labelling so we cannot deducted the fibre.
However, in the US, fiber IS included so it can be deducted.
I have no idea about Germany ... assuming that is where Scheider Brot comes from.

Too optimistic.

Still wouldn`t subtract it and never have.

In the past, it was recommended that fiber be subtracted from the carb count, to create a “net” impact carb count, but this recommendation was dropped by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2014, due to the fact that it’s “often difficult to discern the independent effect of fiber.”

Your choice don`t be surprised if your BGL`s spike.

The same company, I believe, does a protein bread which is just under 4 gm of carbs a slice. Looks like a brown brick. I used to get it in Asda.

Yes, this looks like a brick! Quite palatable though, with lots of seeds. I’ll look out for the protein one.
Thanks for the comments. I’ll assume it’s 9.7 a slice. Ho hum! It was worth a try!

If it is of any interest for the future, one of our inspirational low carb bakers here on the forum has been experimenting with low carb, high fibre bread recipes and is at the stage of contemplating a little business venture producing bread machine packet mixes with her low carb recipe.... I think it was working out at about 3.9g carbs per large slice with a very good bread texture and nice yeast flavour. She has been quite open about some of the recipes she has used but they tend to involve quite specialist ingredients, so if you have a bread maker, it might be possible to buy some of her bread mix kits at some point in the future if she decides to go ahead with that venture or buy the ingredients off the likes of Amazon and make your own to one of the recipes.
