After visiting the gym this evening for a fitness class and walked round the track a couple of times. I felt really strange and think my BG levels must of been quite low (didnt have my meter with me). I hadn't had anything to eat since lunch time...............what sort of snack can you suggest I have before visiting the gym to stop this happening again?

Went to visit my mum on the way home and had a cup of tea and a little chocolate biscuit which sorted me out 🙂

It does sound as though your levels were lower than you have been used to, so it's worth taking your meter next time so you can check and relate the sensation to a number. Not having eaten for a long time will also have contributed and you might have felt the same even without diabetes. A lot of people like to have a cereal bar or banana before, during or after exercise - it depends very much on the individual and how you cope with food in your stomach when exercising. Alternatively, a small carton of juice might be preferable.

I like to exercise no more than two hours after eating as the food has settled in my stomach but still digesting to support my blood sugar levels. It sounds like the tea and biscuit gave you the little lift you needed - always important not to 'overtreat', which can be difficult! 🙂

Hi Sheilagh.

Maybe an isotonic drink, which contain about 10g carbs per 100ml of drink i think. They're designed to get into your bloodstream quickly and shouldn't be too much to send you high, as I understand it.

Hi Sheilagh

My dietician suggested a peanut butter sandwich before exercising. Never tried it though - I found the problem was that I was running too fast for my level of fitness at the time.

Thanks for the update guys I will try each of your suggestions and see which one suits me 🙂

i have a banana 1 hour before swimming, or half of one, this usually sorts me out x

Thanks eat to live will give that a try 🙂

I usually have a banana before my gym workout but will try a peanut butter sandwich sometime.

Love peanut butter seems a good excuse to have little bit :D

After all my hypo problems I am currently finding that 2 ryvita with a little low fat cheese, or boiled egg seem to be doing the trick. However, I do have to make sure I have my tea very soon after exercise - but thats just me. I think you may have to experiment a bit and see what works for you Sheilagh.🙂
