Relationship to Diabetes

I was so happy yesterday after being at the diabetic clinic and my 9lb weight loss. Whilst I was at the clinic I spoke to the doctor and the diabetic nurse about how tired I am every day. I told them both I am tired, fatigued and have no energy and by about 3pm I am about as useful as a chocolate teapot as I am so tired. Both of them told me until my BG is more stable the tiredness could last for as long as 3 months. The nurse spoke to me later and said she sympathised with me as she knows just how tired I am feeling and how debilitating it can be. I also got the flu jab and the nurse said I might feel a bit off after it. I woke this morning and felt more than a bit off. It took me all my energy to get myself out of the house for work. On a normal day I get into work at 8.30am. This morning even though I got up at 6am, it was 10.30am by the time I managed to drag myself out of the house. I couldn't eat anything till about 2pm. As usual by 3, the tiredness was creeping up on me. I stayed at work till 6.30pmseeing as I arrived late at work. 6.30pm was as long as I could work today till total exhaustion set in. I was too tired to walk to get the bus so decided to call a taxi to get home. I went into the street to wait for the taxi arriving. Before I knew it I was standing crying just because of how tired I felt. People walking past me with tears streaming down my face. I'm just so fed up with it and can't wait till the tiredness goes away but I just felt so stupid too. :(. Has anyone else experienced this tiredness and how do you cope with it?

You poor thing. Sounds like more than just the usual tiredness to me. Could it be that you haven't properly got over your last illness? I'd go back to the GP and ask for them to investigate further.

Might be worth a try LeeLee but I couldn't have stressed to them enough yesterday just how bad it is. I'm not one to give in to things LeeLee. I've always been a fighter or as a male friend called me, feisty....lol. Takes a lot to make me cry...people must have thought I was some sort of mad woman! :D

Did you test your BM at any point when you were tired? I feel exactly like you describe when my levels are high, and I will cry at ANYTHING!! Could it be related to thyroid problems? xx

My thyroid shows normal. Been sitting mostly at 6.0 today.

I suggest you print out this thread and show it to GP. Might be better at reading than listening!

Thanks LeeLee and Hobie, I really need to get his sorted. I am struggling every day with tiredness. I have a meeting with my boss to discuss things in general tomorrow but I am going to mention this too. He's quite understanding as bosses go.

Definitely need to get it all sorted out. LeeLee thinking you might be right as well about maybe me not being quite recovered yet from my last illness. My throat stil hurts some days and my voice sounds gravelly some days. I get up in the mornings bunged up and stuffy and my sense of smell is not quite back...so annoying. Anyway as tired as I am, I really need to sleep. Try and get some energy to deal with tomorrow. So it's an early night for me, thanks for your kind words. Nanite all xxx :D

Well if you were at 6-ish all flipping day, it AIN'T diabetes causing it.

Therefore it MUST be summat else.

I suspect Thyroid as well and I would ask them to test your T3 and T4 because if one of them is 'out' your normal thyroid TSH test comes back dead normal but you are far from 'right'.

Plus I'd ask what number 'they' regard as 'normal'. Should be no more than 6 but I know for a fact I operate best when mine's in the 3s.

Hi - Sorry you are feeling so tired.
I was just wondering -are you tired to the point of falling asleep in silly places? I was like you about ten years ago when I fell asleep at my desk at uni and also had been suffering a really bad throat.
Went home and spent about 3 days in bed until I was rushed into hospital and found to have Glandular Fever...it might just be worth having a test to rule it out - but then with bs so good it is probably doubtful.

I hope it improves soon. 🙂

Hi Cat, look into ME/CFS as well.
I can fully relate to how you feel. Slow down and have time for yourself before you have a full blow out.
(((((((((hugs))))))))

You really need to see your gp as this is more than diabetes making you tired. I was going to suggest getting your thyroid checked as well as before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism I literally got to the point where I could not get out of bed. If it is not your thyroid then something else must be causing you to feel so tired. Please get yourself checked out asap.

I think you definitely need to get checked out... I had years of feeling really tired, but not to the extent you were describing, and found out I had anaemia and a serious vit D deficiency (my level was 12 when should have been 160!) and now I'm on medication I feel so much better, as long as my sugars are ok. If your levels were 6 then I don't see how it can be diabetes causing it... xx

I also thought thyroid as I was reading your initial post and do know there is quite a range in 'normal'.

But, I went through a time in my late 20s of being so tired most of the time I would have to take a break when going up the stairs by sitting on a step to get my breath. After investigations over many, many months it was found to be a hormone inbalance and hormone therapy by taking a tablet had my feeling as if I was walking on air. It was wonderful. The hormone therapy is not HRT and it was not early menopause. Perhaps at your next doctor's appointment you could suggest or wonder if it was hormonal.

Do see it through and don't just accept it and cry alone.

Hi, what other medication are you on, it could be a side affect. As i have posted before, i have had problems with my legs, they gave me some pills as they thought it could be nerve endings, these were a mild form of anti-depresants, was not happy about taking them (long story) but when i was on them, i had to use my dinner breaks fora sleep, getting home and sleeping just after dinner, and it does upset you and gets you down so much. Stopped taking them and back to my old self🙂

Hi all, thank you so much for all of your kind comments. Just to let you know I don't fall asleep but am incredibly tired by about 3pm. Can feel my eyes starting to close some days at work. I haven't started on any new medications either. I am definitely going to go back to the doctor and ask them to investigate the tiredness further. I had a catch up with my boss in work today and explained how things went at my diabetes clinic appointment. I went on to tell him about the tiredness and just how badly it is affecting me just now. He was so kind and understanding, telling me that if I am really struggling in work due to tiredness that I should just let him know how I'm feeling and just go home early and I will not lose out or owe any hours. He's not bad at all as bosses go. Today I wasn't too bad but my BG readings were all fairly high today compared with sitting around 6.0. I always feel very very tired when i get up in the mornings and its taking longer than usual to feel a bit more awake. I was very tired by the time I finished at 6.30pm tonight. Thankfully I got a lift home. I'm just sitting chilling after dinner, watching TV and hoping that when I go to bed later I will sleep well. But thanks for all your kind comments and advice, I am so glad I came on to this website after diagnosis. Found lots of lovely people willing to offer a shoulder. Thanks all xx
