Hi I joined this group because my brother has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he has been taking 3 metformin SR for a few weeks and has just started taking 4 a day now for the past few days but he's saying he's feeling a bit unwell in himself, will it just be because his body is getting used to taking 4 tablets now. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

It very much depends on what your brother means by feeling off??
I think that he should be discussing it with his health care professional. Issues with Metformin are usually digestive upset and the SR metformin should reduce that impact. If it is something other than that, he needs to seek medical advice.

Do you know what his HbA1c reading was at diagnosis? Has he made any modifications to his diet and lifestyle? Dropping his Blood Glucose levels too quickly by major dietary changes could make him feel rough or relying on medication without making any dietary changes could also make him feel rubbish. Small steady sustainable changes are best particularly if his HbA1c was really high at diagnosis as it will be a shock to his body to lower his levels too quickly.

Hi yes his HbA1c was very high 153, he says he feels a bit unwell in himself, it doesn't help my brother is a born worrier about health things, he suffers a lot with anxiety and stress especially when it's to do with health, I do think it's partially because he did cut out all sugar, cakes, white bread, and other things straight away, the doctor just did a basic blood test a few weeks after and his blood sugar was down to 89 but he still has a way to go, he still eats a few potatoes and has gravy and we've had that today so not sure if that might be part of the cause, my brother only walks around the house because he doesn't go out and mix or go out anywhere, he's been like it most of his life, I feel for him really, he is the worst person to end up with this mostly because of the way he worries its extreme.

Oh Goodness, that is an hugely high HbA1c!! He has done really well to reduce it to 89 already.
What medication is he on for the diabetes?

I too suffer from stress and anxiety so I understand. Some days I get things totally out of perspective and panic about the most trivial things and other days I am much more rational. Having high BG levels makes you more emotional and less rational anyway, so his levels being high will make his anxiety worse but it sounds like he is doing really well so far but it may just be that his body has got used to those really high BG levels and feels starved now that his levels are starting to come down, particularly if they drop fast.
Would he consider an exercise bike? Many people on the forum find them really beneficial for all year round exercise and regular exercise often improves mental health and confidence as well as diabetes management.

Hi he is on metformin SR, he was taking 3 for a few weeks but has now gone onto 4 and that's what the doctor wants him to take at the moment, I do think maybe he has cut everything out too quickly and that's why he feels the way he feels but he does worry about everything, health is his main stress, I have been trying to to see if I can get a manual treadmill for him to go on and as well to help my mum, he is still having some potatoes though and he does have gravy, I have been making him more healthy foods like omelette looking for low carb stuff, my brother doesn't eat meat though and that's good for protein.
