Hi all have not been on for a while as I dont seem to have the time however here I am stuck in bed feeling ill so the perfect oportunity to catch up. I had to go to my DN today as I have been feeling tired with headaches and pain in my chest for the past couple of weeks which culmanated in mega sore ears, throat and pounding headache on Wed. Turns out I have sinusitus (bloody painful) but have antib's so should be better in next day or so.
I was diagnosed Type 2 in July this year and put on 1x500mg metformin and told that there was no reason for me to have a meter. My reading back then was 16.8 which I have managed to get down to 7.1 however my DN asked me today how my blood sugars were and when I told her I didnot know she said oh thats correct you dont NEED to monitor yourself as you are on Metformin. She tested me and I was 8.9 (before food). I am really confused - I have asked repeatedly for a meter and I keep being told I do not need one, I think it is more to do with costs than the Metformin. I still eat carbs etc however I have lost 2 stones with about another 4 to go. Does anyone think I should get my own meter and if so any recommendations? My DN specifically said not to buy my own - CONFUSED !! Ta (Sorry such a long post) xx:confused:

Hi Mich, sorry to hear you are feeling ill :( I think that most people here would say that there are big advantages to testing. It helps you to determine what foods, and in what quantitites you can tolerate without your levels rising too high, and gives you a much better understanding of diabetes and how it affects you as an individual. Have a look in the 'Useful Links' thread, in particular at Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter - these will give you a good understanding of the reasons why testing can help improve your control. There is also a link to a free meter there. Plus, read Diabetes UK's position statement on self-monitoring - if you are motivated to test and can show that you would use the information to help with managing your diabetes, then there should be no objections from your GP - if there are, then it is almost certainly due to the cost of the strips, so be prepared to stand your ground and demand a full explanation if you are denied strips on prescription.

I hope you are feeling much better soon! 🙂

Thanks Northerner - I will check out your links x

Hi so sorry to hear you are feeling unwell :( I had a sinus infection for 2 weeks before I went to the dr's ( I was up to the hospital alot because my mum's life was ending) as you said sinus infections are very painful. I hope things pick up for you soon. Well done on the weight lost, give yourself a big pat on the back you seem to doing the right things,as for a meter, well it is good to test ( I'm type 1 btw)but I know it is difficult for type 2's. Best wishes Sheena
