Well today was tuff, I have only been injecting humulin since Wednesday 10 units morning and night, but i thought there were no side effects to it, i have not been feeling myself at all, even more tired felt strange at times, been keeping a close eye on my bs and they have been up and down, also find it hard to inject at the same time every day and have the same amount of carbs each time, with kids and cows weeks coming up been doing over time and not eating when i need to, i have been injecting half an hour before eating, i really do not feel right, is it me? so confused right now...it's harder than i thought, but i have managed to inject in my tummy and thought i could not, it's all a bit hard for me right now, im trying my best but not feeling like my self at all :(

Hi Ant,
well done for injecting in your tum. I suspect you feel odd due to your blood sugars being lower than you have been used to. Things will improve so hang in there.
Once you have got used to the idea of injecting tell the nurse the routine you have does not suit your lifestyle so would she mind switching you over to MDI. This will mean four or five injections a day though.

While I am not a insulin user, have your BS come down much? If so this could account for some of the feeling in that coming down from your high levels to a lower level.

Its got to be tuff for you trying to eat the same amount of carbs, with all the over time adding to the daily challenge of trying to sort yourself out.

Its good that you have got over the fear of injecting into your tummy. 🙂 I am being thrown all over the place with this heat and changing to cool then back to the heat. I would hate to think what it must be like in all the protective gear that you have to wear.

Sorry can't be of much more help on what's going on and how one reacts with insulin. just hope you manage to get things sorted and the insulin users can help you a lot more than I can. It might need a call to your DN to see if they can help you out with what's going on, good luck with your progress. 🙂 🙂

Sue....that scares me even more...but so far this particular routine is not working as I cannot eat the same carbs everyday and at the same time...I keep testing my bs and they are going down slowly but then rise quick!!...my body is all over the place and my head is even worse....I thought there would be no side effects.....I feel worse than before...surely this is not normal? or is it?.....makes me wonder my body has been so used to having high levels that now they are going down it is making my body going into some sort of shock...I hate this feeling! I even wondered not to inject...but I have so I must try to keep it going....I never thought it would be like this!!.....im sorry for keep posting but this is all so new to me and don't like feeling odd! :(

Maybe heat is an issue?

Ant,
How much carb are you eating at each meal? Being on that mix I would suspect that the quick acting stuff in it has run out by lunch time, so you will need to have a very light carb lunch.
When you say your blood sugars are going down slowly, what level are you starting at and when do they drop and start to rise again.

You do have to remember that you are on a very low dose at the moment which will gradually be built up to cater for your needs. You will feel unwell/odd to start with as your body has been starved of insulin for quite a while. Have patience things will improve.

Sorry for late reply sue had a very early night was sooo tired, well I have pitta bread most evenings with salad and chicken etc, for breki brown muffin with a banana etc lunch can be anything from a brown sarnie, yesterday woke up bs was 16.6, injected at 8.30am had a slice of toast 15 mins later bs 2 hour later was 13.7 .....now that is good for me normally shoots up to 20 etc...injected at 4.30pm had noodle dish 15 mins later 2hours later bs was a healthy 12.2....once again very good for me...then went to bed early and pre bed was 16.1.
this morning is 18.5......keep waking with high numbers.....very confused

Just a thought and probably isn't possible but it is a heck of a change to your lifestyle and you do need to get used to it. Woudl the GP consider signing you off work for a few days whilst you settle in to this.
I know when i was put on Victoza the offer was given whilst I got used to the sickness, but I was okay in the end.
I know you will probably shudder at the thought of taking time off, but it is your body and sometimes your body has to come before work.
It must be so hard trying to learn it all and change things whilst working too.

Hi Ant, stick with it, the end result will not be far away. It sounds like your 10units of insulin twice a day is not enough, but they have to start you off somewhere, gradually they will tell you to increase it until and if you reach stables bs's, otherwise they may consider MDI for you ......in my opinion from what I have read from your posts, MDI sounds like the answer. You will also be able to eat what you like, just count your carbs, work out what your insulin/carb ratio is and you are away! You must feel totally exhausted from your constant highs!!! Have you lost much weight?

Hi Lucy...it is hard at work especially not feeling myself, the worst thing is trying to not fall of 8 ft staging next to the boat I am repairing.

Hi Phil mDi? not sure what that is......sorry about your friend Phil.

MDI = Multiple Daily Injections. An injection is usually taken before each meal so for most people 3 Fast acting insulin injections a day, plus 1 long acting (slow release per day). MDI gives you much more flexibility and you can eat pretty much what you like as long as you count your carbohydrates and you work out your insulin to carb ratio. For examble: 2 slices of toast for breakfast = 36g of carb, if your ratio is 1 unit of insulin to 10g carb, 36gcarb = 3.6 units of insulin.

Ok I see, makes sense and is more flexible.

Then this does sound definitley like a need to be signed off for a bit - or put on ground duties doesn't it. Is there any chance of this Ant?

Lucy my boss is just an arse! Honestly he does not care, I told him I have been put on insulin and he needs to inform insurance company on the work van, just said ok not how are you nothing! I warned him about possible hypos just so he new and asked me to get him a pamflet on the condition from my docs! I told him to bloody look on the net and educate yourself!

Hi Ant, in my opinion, you are injecting and eating to early in the evening.
You need a longer space between those injections. You also do need to leave it 30 mins before you eat after injecting as well. This is due to the type of insulin you are using it takes 30 mins to warm up 🙂
You will have high numbers to start with as we have all told you, you are on a low dose to start with and it is being adjusted every few days until the right level is achieved.
There is another option and that is to also have a short acting insulin at lunch time. and keeping the same insulin you are on now for morning and evening. This involves 3 injections a day rather than 4 or 5 🙂

My dn told me to eat 15mins after injecting as the insulin is fast acting

It aint that fast 🙄

Humulin M3 Lilly Human Vial, cartridge, prefilled pen 20?45 mins before food

Now this info is freely available on the net.
The insulin you are using is one of the older types and is not as quick as the analogues.
I also know this because I use animal insulin and the speed of it is exactly the same as what you are using.

As I already stated you need to eat a bit later in the evening as 4,30 is far to early to inject due to the background insulin not lasting until the morning.

Ok...it,s so dam confusing.......right in your opinion what time should I inject? Then eat?.....I just want to get this right, thankyou for your advise x

Personally I would not eat before 5.30 pm So if that is the case then inject at 5pm. Breakfast I wouldn't inject any later than 8 AM.

You will get there take small steps and don't be so impatient 😛
