Had day off today so spent most of the day in the sunshine! however was meant to leave insulin at home, ended up taking it with me in my bag so it was in 24 degree heat most of the day!

Totally forgot and so had dinner as normal and now my bloods are sky high and i feel really awful and silly and angry at myself :( 😡

Would it have affected my long lasting the same way as well?

oi don't knock yourself we all do it we is human!
I think it would do the same to your night time insulin too, but hey I ain't no expert!

Chin up girl

Rossi 🙂

Don't beat yourself up hun it's an easy mistake to make. I agree with Rossi that it'll probably have gotten your long-acting too..

Hope you're levels come down and you're feeling much better soon

Heya,

Hope you enjoyed the sunshine, we all need have some R&R! 😉

I would take this incident as experience but deffo discard the pens and start with fresh ones!

Dont forget that all this lovely heat and humidity will play havoc with the levels and if you correct, just be mindful, certainly overnight of the hypos!! I'm at 3.3 as I write this! 😱

Yep. Replace both with fresh cartridges.

Frio bags are good for keeping insulin cool in the heat. Bought one recently and am really impressed with it. Saves worrying.🙂

Not hot enough here at the mo to be a problem mind you 🙄

Rob

Thanks guys, yer i will definitely learn from this experience!

Changed the cartridges straight away but will keep checking through the night just in case, urgh i hate the feeling when my bloods are high!

If it is something you'd normally take with you, then it is easy to put something in your bag from habit and not realise you are doing it, even if you don't intend to do it. I hope you are feeling better now. You are like all the other wonderfull people here, human, and we all do daft things dometimes.

I had no idea that temperature was an issue for insulin! Does it stop working? Now I feel stupid! It would explain a lot if this is the case. What temperature should it be stored at?

Can't remember the actual temperatures but it says on the information leaflets in the boxes. It's surprising how hot it gets in a car or bag in the sun.

Not sure if it tails off slowly, the warmer it gets, or whether it needs to be exposed to the high temp for some time and it just cooks and stops working.

Hi everybody - I'm new to the forum 🙂

I've been taking long acting insulin for over 35 years now and I've never experienced any weakness in the insulin despite it being kept unrefrigerated and often in hot cars, or travelling in hot climates on holidays.

However, I've just started MDI (Humalog/Lantus) and I was very concerned to read the earlier posts about the effects of high temperatures. So I've just done a rather unwise experiment (I just had to know!) and this evening I took my usual dose of Humalog from my back up supply in my car boot. This had been in there since earlier in the week during the very high temperatures.

Despite eating less CHO's than I needed to I find that 4 hours later my BG is at 14.8 and then 16.8 30 mins after that! My BG's have been very good so far on MDI.

Possibly fast acting insulin is more fragile than longer acting insulin. If this is so I'm going to have to be much more careful where I keep my back up kit during the Summer months.

Hi ANdrew. Welcome 🙂

I'm intrigued that you've only been on long acting insulin for over 35 years. How have you managed without short acting for such a long time ?

Or was it a mixed insulin (short+long acting components) ?🙂

Rob

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum 🙂 Definitely worth erring on the side of caution where the insulin is concerned 🙂

Hi Rob. Thanks for the welcome.

I may have misled you and perhaps I should have referred to my previous insulin as 'longer acting'. I was previously on Humulin which replaced my Mixtard.

As my HBA1c's have progressively increased I finally relented and took the good advice from the DSN to go MDI. This has been suggested as a 'trial run' before I hope to be offered a pump.

So far the MDI has worked extremely well in just over a week. So it's fingers crossed.............

It sounded a bit of an extreme regime to be on for so long :D

I was offered MDI back in the mid to late 90s I think (poor memory) and never regretted it once. It made life so much more flexible, but I (and I'm not alone on this!) am still reluctant to ask for a pump.

But we do have a thriving pump section on the forum, full of very enthusiastic users who will tell you all the pros and cons if you want to hear them, or just have any queries.🙂

Us luddites can only advise on the more general stuff, sadly.🙄

Rob

I think it's a balance between MDI's and the thought of being attached to a pump. The good thing is there is no need to rush as long as the MDI works🙂

If you have any questions at all, feel free to post.

It's surprising what you can learn after so many years.🙂

Rob

So this thought as just come to me....

what happens if you are on an insulin pump in this heat, surely walking around your insulin is exposed to the high temperatures???

..and welcome to the forum andrew 🙂

Pumping friend just got back from Crete - 40 degrees + - beach, walking, whatever ...... he'd taken the wherewithal to revert to Plan A (ie MDI) if he needed to, but said what he did was to only put 4 days supply in his reservoirs, and change to a new res religiously on day 5, lobbing the remainder of the insulin. And he was fine.

He's like a lot of us too, on MDI I've been in Crete in those temperatures and not had to bolus until dinner-time! Mixture of the heat, the activity and the red wine!

Hey hun ..

Dont beat yourself up and worry about it .... Ive made the mistake with Nathans ... I bought a frio pack after that ... its brill .🙂

Hope you enjoyed the sunshine 🙂

Heidi
