Relationship to Diabetes
Steroid Induced Diabetes
Hi, I have steroid induced diabetes, I've been diagnosed for over five years, I've been a dreadful diabetic.
Recently I had a stay in hospital and two surgeries on a huge abscess exacerbated by uncontrolled blood sugar.
For 4 weeks or so my bloods have been perfect, but I'm constantly hungry and totally bored with food, this has been my downfall before.
I am insulin dependent and I'm teetering with regards to food. I feel its a cop out with upping my insulin with food as I'm injecting huge quantities to offset the carbs which isn't ideal.
I have multiple health issues that aren't diabetes related.
Thoroughly fed up.

Welcome @steveh1970 I hope you’ve recovered well from your abscess surgery - that sounds nasty. Well done on keeping such good control these last few weeks, but I can understand why you don’t want to be hungry. Hopefully the food boredom can be reduced. Can you give us an idea of an average day’s food for you at the moment?

And what insulins do you take, when and how much?

At the moment I'm primarily eating breakfast, cooking for my partner and son, but generally not eating what I cook, ive lost interest in food.

Do you think that’s because of your abscess and feeling rough? Would some new recipes or a new cookbook inspire you? I find that can help a lot, especially if they’re reasonably simple recipes.

No, thankfully the wound is healing, it's the whole diabetes thing thats putting me off, I enjoy a hearty meal, which I don't think goes hand in hand with diabetes.

Yes, I think hearty meals are often thought of as massive carb-feasts, which are harder with diabetes. Could you concentrate on making your meals more filling and adding some little luxury item(s) to make them more interesting and more of a treat. For example, a large steak could be seen as hearty but has zero carbs, some nice sauces or olives or smoked salmon or Creme fraiche, etc etc, are all treats but not massively carby.
