Hi everyone,
I have two questions I keep mulling over.
1) If your fasting BG levels are good, can you be confident your HBA1c is also good? Eg. Is it possible to have good fasting results but find your HbA1c is higher than you'd want it?
2) I have just changed testing machines and my results are much lower. Is there really that much difference between machines?
Many thanks
Teadance

No it cannot guarantee that your Hba1c is good, the Hba1c measures glucose from the last 3 months so even if your fasting levels are good you may be having spikes throughout the day therefore your Hba1c will be higher, sorry I cant help on the question on meters x

Hi Teadance and good question. I see it like this. Quite often the Hb result is lower than you'd expect if you're testing and have daily averages. That's particularly so if your levels are lower all night (fasting) because in terms of averages you could have a low BG for 12 hrs which is half your day. So it's a positive sign but the important thing is regulating your response to food. It's more about keeping levels more steady and protecting the blood vessels so sudden massive fluctuations are to be avoided where possible.

There are variations in meters, many people report that phenomenon but there's a margin for accuracy error with all machines.

Thanks Kaylz,
That makes sense. I think I was hoping fasting BG was a good indicator.

Amigo, yes it makes sense to keep levels steady throughout the day. I keep forgetting that. When my levels are good in the morning I think I'm ok.

My hba1c is higher than I was expected but my fasting tests are always good. We think we've worked it out that its me peaking after meals.

The only way to see those peaks is by using a Libre CGM/Flash monitoring system. When you see those hidden peaks on a graph, you can work out how to level them out a bit, and adjust boluses both in size and timing. The problem, of course, is the cost, but if you could blag a trial from your Diabetes team, you have the chance to learn the changes you need before it has to be returned.

I have a libre. Can only afford it a couple of times a year though. It's just finished yesterday and I miss it already

I think that answers my question. I can't be complacent about good fasting figures. Thanks. Back to the drawing board!
