Hi All,

I've recently done a number of fasted glucose tests in the morning at home (using a codefree glucose monitor).

My scores have been in the pre diabetic range (averaging around 6.0-6.3 mmol/L) when done fasted but are usually normal levels postprandial or in the evening (around 5.3 mmol/L).

It would be great if anyone had any advice as to what could be the reason for this and if it is a means for concern? I'm not really sure which number is more important to follow..

Kind Regards,
Guy

Hi Guy, welcome to the forum 🙂 You're numbers look perfectly OK to me 🙂 Waking numbers are often a little more elevated than later in the day, even in people who don't have diabetes, because the liver naturally releases a 'boost' of extra glucose from its stores to give you energy to start the day - this can happen quite abruptly, I have been using a Libre sensor which shows that my levels are perfectly flat overnight, but then they jump 1-2 mmol/l as soon as my feet hit the floor and I open my eyes! As the day progresses and you have been more active, you will become more insulin-sensitive, so numbers are likely to be lower 🙂

Hi Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify, would those ±6.0 scores class me as prediabetic, or would I fall under the normal range? not too sure on the numbers/levels side of things..

Kind Regards,
Guy

No, I would say not, particularly in view of your readings later in the day - the readings are in normal range. Do you feel you have any symptoms of diabetes?

No I wouldn't say I have any symptoms. I started by checking my postprandial just to assess how I reacted to various carbohydrate types. I then Decided to test in the morning to see my fasted (out of interest) and was worried by results as I have a history of diabetes in the family.

I don't think you need to worry at this stage @Guy, but sensible to do the occasional check and perhaps tailor your diet to reduce your risk given your family history. Remember that a healthy diet for someone with diabetes is a healthy diet for everyone! 🙂 Have a read of Maggie Davey's letter, it might give you some useful pointers 🙂

Remember also that meters are not totally accurate my code free measures almost 1point higher than my accu check A Hba 1c test will give you a more accurate check over 3months
