Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there. I was diagnosed Type 2 last year around May time. Been ticking along ok, have lost 1 stone in weight to try and help and my diet is very boring & not varied as I am also Gluten free and not a lover of vegetables!

Anyway, confused as a recent urine sample was requested by the GP who I saw for niggling side pain - had for approx 2 months. I had to stop taking linagliptin as nurse thought it could be that - but blood tests showed no issues. But my urine sample apparently has lots of sugar in it - but nothing else was said. I can't get an appointment with my nurse for 2 weeks now and am concerned that i need one for her to check the sample results - do I? I am not worried but I am as I am told it's bad to have a lot of sugar in the urine... I am new to all this and still finding things out!

Welcome to the forum.
For glucose to be in your urine it generally means your blood glucose will be too high for comfort, and also makes you more susceptible to urinary tract infections which can cause pain. To be on the medication you were implies your HbA1C would be well into the diabetes zone so if you are no longer on that then diet is going to be more important than ever.
There is no need for your diet to be boring as there is plenty you can eat even if you are gluten free, in some respects it is not problematic as many of the carbs you would be wanting to reduce have gluten anyway.
Have a look at this link for some idea for a low carb approach which you may find has meals which will suit you. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
I would highly recommend you get a home blood glucose monitor which will enable you to check the effect of meals on your blood glucose and also keep track of day to day or week to week progress.

Perhaps if you give a bit more information about your diagnosis and what your HbA1C is and have you been given any other medication as this will help people make some suggestions.

Welcome to the forum @casper73

Sorry to hear about the pains in your side. Hope the investigations find the cause. Pausing your linagliptin is probably just a precaution.

Do you monitor your blood glucose levels at home? Glucose in the urine can happen when levels are above the renal threshold, approx 10mmol/L, and the kidneys try to flush it out through increased urination.

Have you been needing to wee more often?

Hi thanks for the replies - Looking back I can see my post was a bit waffly!

So i don't monitor my blood glucose levels at home
Not been needing the toilet more frequently
my HBA1c levels were 59 in April / 80 in July when medicated was started & 52 in November

I am on Metformin 500mg tablets - 1 in the morning and 2 in the evening - for some reason I couldn't do 4 a day as they made me feel really sick

so linagliptin was then added - 1 a day but this was stopped early December whilst the side pain was checked - no sign of any issues with my pancreas etc.

I have dropped a note into the surgery today for my nurse who i see for my diabetes and hopefully she can get back to me before the 2 weeks waiting for a phonecall!

Some people do find they cannot tolerate the increased dose of metformin. But with your HbA1C at 52mmol/mol then tightening up on your diet would hopefully make a difference and get you going in the right direction.
Keeping a food diary of everything you eat and drink with an estimate of the total carbs not just 'sugar' can be really useful in seeing where some saving can be made to keep you below the suggested 130g carbs per day for a low carb approach to reducing blood glucose.
