Relationship to Diabetes

i really need some help please. My glasses prescription has changed four times in the last five months. Going up and down and up and down. In that time with correction the vision has worsened to 6/12 in my "good" eye. Opticians won't prescribe glasses due to the fluctuations and Moorfields don't know what to do. I'm struggling to watch TV or read on the computer. The only suggestion they have is "diabetes" but then don't think that is the answer as my levels are ok and I've been told that my eyes are excellent with regard to diabetes. Any thoughts/help/advice would be really appreciated because it is really upsetting me.

The only suggestion I can make is to speak to my optician who appears to have a better understanding of diabetes than most of the others I have ever spoken to. I would do it on your behalf but have no knowledge of your medical history. If you ring Howards Opticians and speak to Stuart. His no is 01744 24324. He is a really nice lad and dead helpful.

Thank you so much Diabeticliberty. I've just phoned them. The receptionist said that she will speak to Stuart when he is free but she doesn't think that he will be able to advise because he hasn't seen my eyes.

Thank you Grovesy. I'm so frustrated.

Have Moorfields given any indication of a possible cause for your deteriorating/fluctuating vision AJ? A world famous centre like that and it all seems so imprecise. Isn't there somewhere else or other tests they can do if they don't understand the cause? Would a replacement lens help?

My heart goes out to you because ironically I've just has an eye test and whilst there's no underlying retinopathy or problems, the sight in my right eye has worsened considerably. I saw a renowned Opthamologist and yet it's taken a High Street optician to tell me she thinks I have a cataract developing in one eye! He didn't notice it.

I wish I had some answers for you but really hope they can find some for you soon. Eyes are so precious.

Thank you Amigo. I'm so sorry that you're having problems with your eyes. Big hugs. I had my cataracts done about five years ago because of the glaucoma. On Friday the glaucoma doctor at Moorfields said that the lens that they put in were fine and the glaucoma consultant said that it definitely wasn't the glaucoma causing problems and she didn't know what the problem was. She said that she would write to diabetic retina so that they can see me sooner than planned- but when I saw them in April they couldn't see what was causing the problem.

I can understand your frustration AJ...hugs back x

I don't know where you live but Howards is in St. Helens which is just off Junction 23 on the M6. Would it not be worth getting an appointment with him?

The receptionists there can sometimes be a little bit awkward. I could try ringing myself for you but I don't think he would discuss you with me and I don't know your medical history.

Thankyou Bry Caby I was just thinking that was a good idea and then remembered that I have to have glasses specificalky made because I need a balance with my left eye which has particularly bad sight.

Thank you Diabeticliberty. Howard phoned me a few minutes ago and went through various causes. The only one that couldn't be ruled out is a possible problem with the cornea so I will see my optician tomorrow and discuss that with her because nobody has mentioned the cornea before. thanyou so much for your help. I think he commented on how complicated my eyes are 🙂

Maybe another optician might be an idea AJ, I know this current one knows your history, but sometimes a different perspective can be useful. I assume they've ruled out anaemia, B12, magnesium deficiencies etc as a possibility (I only mention it because the last time I had an eye pickle they tested the lot, oh and various neurological things)? Have they mentioned neurological testing to make sure there's nothing awry with the nerves? I understand your frustrations, I have complex eyes (we're an exclusive club 🙂) and nothing is ever simple.

Kooky at I'm sorry that you have problems with your eyes as well. Since February I've been to three different opticians. So I'm not sure what else to do. I've had a lot of blood tests in recent times but not because of my eyes. I think that when I go to the optician tomorrow I will really beg for help and see what happens. I've had neurological tests before but my eyes seem to do different things different times and nobody seems to join up the dots!

Have you worn contact lenses long term Amanda? At my last contact lens check I was told to stop wearing my lens as the oxygen level to my cornea was too low and I know that can lead to real issues with sight. Just a thought and I'm sure if you do wear lenses then the optician would have looked for corneal damage as a routine check. I really hope you can get a proper answer to your sight problems.

Thank you very much Flower. All suggestions very appreciated but nope I've never worn contact lenses.
