Hi all, hope everyone is well!

I used to get the occasional twitch of my eyelid, when I was tired or stressed. Now it seems to be happening almost constantly and is incredibly irritating. Is this a known side effect of Metformin? Or high/low sugars? I've just gone from one tablet a day to two.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I think it’s more likely to either have increased because diabetes itself is debilitating and stressful, or you’re possibly just noticing it more. It is so annoying though, I twitched all the way through an interview for a job that I really wanted once 😱

I don't know about the metformin or BG level. Mine (twitching in eyelids, cheek, edge of hand and legs) was down to Atovastatin, from what I could do. It changed with a reduction in prescription.

Usually related to stress and tiredness, experienced them before in stressful times of life where sleep is reduced.

keep in mind, although you are fully aware of the twitch the likelihood is nobody else will notice it, so don't worry about it.

I've had it when I was tired too - I thought it was a muscular thing. Might it be linked to your MS? - I have ME which has a lot of overlap with MS. It's not caused by high/low sugars, but I don't know about side effects of meds.

I hope it goes soon, it's a real nuisance when it happens.

Eyelid twitching is almost always due to tiredness or stress, and almost never due to any pathology. The reason it is more frequent in systemic illnesses, particular neurological ones (I’ve got one) is the fatigue that almost always accompanies them. The same can happen in diabetes if your BG is high, which does cause tiredness.

I don’t know of any drugs that cause eyelid twitching. Not legal ones, anyway.🙂

One way to stop it, I find, is rubbing the eye quite firmly - that seems to stop the reflex from working for a while. Smudges the mascara and eye shadow, though.
