Today I received a letter with an appointment for my eye screening in December. I had my first eye screening back in August 2019 everything came back fine so was due my next in August this year but because of covid i thought it would be next year before I was seen. I had a few problems in may with flashing in one eye. Had an emergency opticians appointment who found the jelly in my eye was coming away and had left a small hole in the retina. As there’s a family history of retinal detachment he wanted me to see an eye specialist. Fast forward to the end of June I went to my appointment had loads of drops put in, scans done, photos taken etc and spoke to a wonderful eye specialist who said it’s very common, not worth laser surgery unless it gets worse and my eyes look healthy. I asked him about my diabetes and he said my eyes show no signs of diabetes at all. My question is would you go to this screening now or wait until next year? I’m not overly keen to go with everything that’s going on and works stupidly busy so don’t want to take time off plus someone else can have the appointment BUT it’s my eye sight and I don’t want to kick myself if something has changed.

I might see if I can get hold of my diabetes nurse this week and see what she says.

Hi @bakebeans and pleased to hear your eyes were given a clean bill of health. However, I never turn down an appointment, especially as we don't know when the next ones might be. So I'd personally go because eye sight is precious and I'd rather have too many appointments than too few.

Speaking to your DN is a good idea though. I have no idea how rapidly things can develop and she'll be in a better position to advise. Good luck whichever you decide 🙂

I would have said go, as they'd be looking at different things. Of course, with what you've been told, and the current situation, that makes me wonder. I was going to say ring the eye screening service and ask them about it. Certainly talk to your practice nurse.

@bakebeans I know the uncertainty with what`s going but I wouldn`t
give up an appointment, I`ve got an appointment to see the DSN in
Torbay Hospital in December the place is crawling with Covid 19
but I`m still going.

I would make the appointment @bakebeans

Good to hear no changes related to diabetes have been spotted so far, but it sounds like a sensible precaution to get screened as soon as you can, in case there’s any delay in getting the appointment in the future

Thanks for the replies. If hubby is still on furlough I will go to the appointment if he’s back at work I’ll give them a call and ask to re arrange it for his day off so he can drive me in
