Hi peeps,

Nathan had his annual retina screening this morning .... all was good ... 🙂

Although it was met with protest, as he didnt want it done, which then sparked off .. the Im sick of diabetes ... and want to be left alone ... He did have it done ... and was pleased once it was over.

The Eye Screening nurse, had a good chat with Nathan, about the importance of having it done ... and that they will even offer him appoinments at various other locations and up to 6pm at night .. 🙂

Both me and the nurse both agreed as non diabetics ... we wouldnt want drops in our eyes ... to the point that when the drops were admistered to Nathan, I could have cried, much to the fact that, I can relate to why Nathan must get fed up with this whole diabetes stuff.

Glad that's over and done with Heidi. I'm a little surprised that he needed the drops though, I thought that young people could generally have the scans done without needing them as their pupils would dilate sufficiently. Has it ever been put forward as an option not to use drops, or do they just use them automatically?

Hi Alan ...

Nathan has always had them .. if I remember when he was first diagnosed, he was offered the screening without, but it would be better to have them in,I suppose it would get Nathan and other children used to having them.

Hi Heidi pleased the screening is over and done with I dread mine everytime the appt letter drops through the door.I always thought drops were only for over 18s  silly me x

I haven't had drops the last 2 times, it must just be protocol as opposed to actually needing them as I suppose some may not need it and some will........

I'm glad the screening went well! 🙂
But I'm surprised too that Nathan needed drops. Carol has never had drops yet, she's 14. She's had 4 tests so far.

I want to give Nathan a great big hug and make it all better. I never want to have the retinal scan either, but I go. Tell Nathan he is a brave boy as the drops are not brilliant for anyone and if we could hold hands to have it done at the same time it would be brilliant.

The GMNT had his first one last week. I asked if they put the drops in (he went with his dad), and he said yes. He has the most enormous eyes and huge pupils*, but they still used the drops. I had a retinal photo done at the optician's a few weeks ago, and she didn't use the drops at all... Go figure!

I feel for Nathan. I wish he had the GMNT's phlegmatic approach to it all. It doesn't mean the GMNT hates it less, just that he's more resigned. I think following in Dad's footsteps and knowing how much easier it is to do all the testing and jabs than it was even 15 years ago has helped. His last comment about it was 'It's sh**ty and I hate it. But I'm stuck with it, and dealing with it is better than dying of it!' Always the realist! There's no end to the wishing we could dial back the clock or administer the magic Mummy kiss and make it all better... All we can do is be there to pick up the bits and dust them off when they need us.

*The optician comments on this every time he sees her, and he's been going since he was five!
