hi all
i have just had my results from my first eye screening and the results were all good but was wondering if i should have more regular checks with a general optician or just wait for my yearly screening, if i should have more regular checks then who would you recommend and do i have to pay for the service. i dont wear glasses or contacts and seem to control my levels ok but dont want to put anything at risk, especially the care of my eyes, any advice would be great, hope your all well.. 😱

Hi jay-jules,

I have my eyes screened every year and I also have my normal eye test with the optician every year which the eye test is free for diabetics but you obviously have to pay for any glasses etc that you may need. Not sure if the eye test is free if you aren't on any medication though?

The 2 are obviously different types of eye test but I do show the optician my retinapathy screening results which get sent to me.

Regards.

If there isn't a problem or any signs of one I'd agree with Andy, however, try and stagger your two appointments so that you're checked every 6 months.

I think yearly is fine for going to the opticians for sight and general eye health. The test is free to all with diabetes I believe, I think they would try to charge if you went more often than once a year

I go for an eye test as well as my retinal scans. My understanding is the retinal scan is looking for specific damage associated with diabetes, and an eye test checks your sight and picks up on other more general changes or problems. Unless you think there is a problem (always wise to seek advice if worried) once a year is generally enough.

I have mine done every year, usually about a month before my screening. In fact they're both due in the next couple of months. I haven't needed my prescription changed in 5 years and have had no signs of retinopathy since I was diagnosed just over two years ago. I think the eye test is free only if you're on meds, but I won't swear to that. It's still well worth doing though.

The Optician I see at Specsavers is a really nice guy and will photograph my eyes if I am at all concerned between my 12 monthly hospital check, there's a charge for this service normally but I've yet to pay:D

This thread is over 2 years old now

The thread was resurrected by a naughty person trying to advertise. But nice that it's sparked fresh posts. 🙂
