Been told for last 8 yrs that things 'not that bad' with a1bc around 48, I moved house 8 weeks ago and saw a new diabetic nurse where she ripped into that - looked at my 'diet' which was all carbs and chocs etc she gave me the Scarborough warning and I've decided to kick the backside out of this. So I've chopped out the choc and ice cream and now diarise my food. Lost a stone and blood now at 6.9mmol this morning , the lowest reading I've had in 8 yrs. blood pressure better too 137/80 today. Worrying thing for me is my calorie intake has dropped significantly to around 1200-1400. I've never eaten so much protein do us that filling me up?? I'm not over hungry ??
Anyway - hi everyone

Ey up Tone, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Well done on the new you and weight loss - losing weight often makes people more sensitive to the insulin they are producing so levels come under better control. Mind you, there are many who would be very happy with an HbA1c of 48, so I'm surprised the nurse laid into you over it! 😱 Good idea to moderate the carb intake though. If you are testing and diarising your food, are you also following a regime to determine what foods you tolerate well (have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to see if it sounds familiar). If not, then it's worth doing as there might be some carb items you tolerate well so no need to leave them out of your diet, unless it's for weight-loss reasons. Paradoxically, eating more fat will give you the calories you might feel you are missing, but if you are on low carbs generally it shouldn't cause weight gain, despite what they have been telling us for the past 30 years 🙄

Protein does fill you up better than carbs, so you won't get that 'Chinese takeaway' feeling of wanting another meal as soon as you've finished one 🙂

Let us know if you have any questions and we will be happy to help! 🙂

Hi Tone & welcome to the forum.🙂

Hi Tone, welcome.

Cheers.
It was 52 last week so she pointed out the sliding into the mire scenario in a very robust way - I like that approach to be honest - a bollocking rather than airy fairy
I'm quite boring food wise so my reactions are pretty good. I am .... No was.... A breadaholic and this has been swapped now with cracker breads so I know where the cals have dropped from (I'd have ave 8 slices of b&b a day).
Metfirmin 1000mg x2 a day and then blood pressure pills too - hoping to get these reduced in 12 weeks time though

Hi Tone and welcome 🙂
I too thought you had got a telling off for 48 and that panicked me a bit cos my last hba1c was up to 52. So I see why she was pushing you and good for you taking it on board and working towards a healthier lifestyle. Sounds like you're on the right track.

Hiya Tone and welcome.🙂 Well done for taking that kick up the backside seriously and making improvements!😛

Hiya Tone. Welcome to the forum. :D

Hiya Tone
Sounds like you're on the low carb/full fat bandwagon...which has worked wonders for me. If you're a bit of a breadaholic then I'd recommend LIDL protein rolls. They're my 'go to' option when I want something bready and contain just c8-10g of carbs per roll. I bloomin' love 'em I do. Go on...give them a try....you know you want to :D

Well done Tone for giving yourself a kick up your now reducing backside! :D

Sounds like you're on the right track and the angry nursie might have actually done you a favour. 8 slices of bread a day would have my BG's higher than the national debt so wisely swopped!

Normally healthy fats replace the lost carbs, the protein can be increased a bit, about 50% of protein is turned into glucose.
This is what I would have liked to have known from day 1. I would cut the Sugars including fruit/juice and Starches, including breads, pasta, rice, potato etc. Use a home blood test meter, to see what will work.

This gives a simple overview to how it works for me. The more carbs I eat, the more carbs I want. They don’t give up easy and it’s biochemical

Welcome to the forum, Tone. As well as modifying your diet, I hope you're enjoying the coast paths around Scarborough. I did Scarborough to Filey a couple of weeks ago, with a friend who completed Cleveland Way. You could walk one way north or south and get bus back.
