Hi. I’m extremely worried I have diabetes. I am 18 years old & I am at a healthy weight. My diet also seems to be okay/normal. I don’t eat too much sugar or fat. However, I am extremely worried as I have been getting diabetes symptoms and it runs in my family, as my dad has it. The symptoms I have been getting are extreme fatigue, weakness, increased hunger and headaches with occasion dizziness. I don’t know if this is a symptom but I also have bad vision as I tend to struggle to see things from a distance. Whilst I do understand they could be related to another condition, I have convinced myself it’s diabetes. I will ring my doctor up soon but I’m just worried and scared at the moment. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What would you recommend doing? Sorry for the rant. I appreciate any comments.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂 Try not to worry too much until you've spoken to the doctor and then you can just deal with it once you know what's what.

Perfect advice from Ditto.

As the others said, see your doctor. (Whatever it is, it's clearly a problem for you.)

(For what little it's worth, two of the classic symptoms are urination and thirst and you don't report those. (Tiredness is also one, admittedly.))

What type of diabetes does your dad have @moonlighx ? What age was he diagnosed? Your symptoms could be anything really eg anaemia. You do need to speak to a doctor if only to put your mind at rest.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks for replying. He has type two diabetes and was diagnosed in his mid thirties. I’ve had a blood test about 9 months ago and everything was normal. Do you recommend booking another blood test? Will this help to detect diabetes or any other problems? I will speak to the doctor as soon as I can. Thanks for your time and message. I really appreciate it X

Your GP will be the best person to decide what tests would be appropriate.

Ok, I was just checking he didn’t have Type 1. Although you do have Type 2 in your family, I’d think it would be very unusual to be diagnosed Type 2 at 18yrs of age, especially as you say you’re normal weight.

I think if I were you, I’d speak to the GP and describe your symptoms. Unfortunately, tiredness is quite a common complaint and it could be a number of things or just nothing at all really. As you mentioned your eyesight and feeling dizzy (which could be linked to your eyes) I’d think about an eyesight test too. I’d also make sure I wasn’t spending too long on screens (lockdown has increased lots of people’s screen use).

Obviously also do all the normal things like eating plenty of healthy foods for vitamins and minerals, and getting enough sleep and fresh air.

Thank you for your time and reply once again. I will do all the following you have suggested. Perhaps it’s just the sitting at home during lockdown & then the sudden change of going back into sixth form coupled up with overthinking, who knows? I appreciate your time and advice I will definitely speak to my gp if the symptoms persist as soon as I can
