hi, I went for my check up recently and the nurse said my sugars are a bit high even though I have been so good this last 3 months, anyway she put me on an extra metformin 500 . I have been feeling very tired since she did this and I wonder. I have to force myself to do my jobs etc and I don’t like it.
Has anyone else had this reaction to metformin being increased ? Should I go back to what I had been taking ?

I was like that before I was diagnosed, so don't know if metformin has that affect. If it persists at all, ask your nurse or see a doctor. If it's some time before you can see them, pharmacists are supposed to be able to give advice about medication.

Thanks Ralph, I had everything under control quite well but over the last few years I have had some fairly traumatic events and I have gone awry .
I have just had my check up so I think I will start by asking a pharmacist, they are very good with advice I agree !

I'm sorry to hear that Anncal.

As metformin is not an active blood glucose reducing drug I can't see how it would help - unless the nurse thinks that your liver is dumping glucose all the time - maybe go back and report your tiredness - maybe request tests to see if there has been any benefit from the change - or is it still too early?

Well I'm just thinking ….. being extra tired can be a result of higher BGs for too long but are also very commonly indeed as a result of hypothyroidism - or lots of other things like lack of Vit D or B12.

So - what sort of BGs are you seeing when you do your own fingerprick blood tests at home, and do you test randomly not just before/after eating, plus what TFT results are you getting when they do them along with your HbA1c, and what is your latest HbA1c result?

I was wondering that too Jenny - high BG makes me feel really sluggish.

I have just been put on another metformin 4 in all I was tired before treatment dr said it was a symptom of Diabetes.the only thing it did was to upset my digestive system for a few days and it's suppressed my appetite a bit

I do get tired as a result of high BG, but I remember that when I started taking the Metformin and the levels lowered, the tiredness went away. I haven't felt it as a result of the tablet. As Jenny said, what have your BG levels been like lately?

I’m on 2 x 500 mg metformin twice a day and have gone from no energy (pre dx) and breathing difficulties on exercise, to being able to walk steadily for about 45 mins and have never felt better now my bg levels are within normal range. Makes me wonder just how I kept going for as long as I did, only now that I feel well do I realise just how awful I did feel :(

I have been slow to reply because the nurse didn’t actually give me my hba1c results, just said they were going down then concentrated on the first high blood pressure result I have had, the test , which I hate , was given by a student nurse who fiddled rather and made me a bit nervous ..anyway a bit high, so I have to have a monitor fitted for a day to see what I am like at home. Well if it squeezes me like the thing does I will be stressed all day !!
Anyway, when I was first diagnosed I lost tons of weight and everything was perfect so I am on the same path as then again .
My confusion was brought on by being told several things I thought were ok to eat were apparently not... like carrots, peppers, sweet corn , tomatoes..... I am a veggie too so it does seem to get harder !!
Thanks for your comments ,I shall plod on !
