As others have dais, definitely go to the do.
Estimate as best you can, and be cautious, especially as you will no doubt be dancing afterwards.
Don’t bolus until each course is in front of you when eating out. I only prebolus when I have control over the timing of my food being in front of me.
And finally ENJOY the evening. Running a bit high for a one off is worth it to enjoy your evening.

Apart from this event, it is well worth asking for a half unit pen. It makes doing adjustments a lot easier and helps to get levels settled. I found this especially useful with my basal insulin.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you everyone, feeling hopeful now. It's such early days for me I know things will get more familiar if not exactly easier. Fingers crossed, chin up, I WILL have fun ;-)

I’ve done some wild stuff in my youth. It’s nothing that can’t be sorted out the following day with a hangover. Just be careful you don’t go low. Or too high. No question has ever been a “no no.” Keep asking. Have a great time.

Sounds wonderful. If you take me with you as your plus one, I can carb count it for you and we can jab our insulin together! :D

My guesses would be :-

15-20g carbs for the starter, mostly in the sourdough crostini.

Maybe 20-25g in the main course with the bubble and squeak and carrots.

About 15g for the Eton mess and another 25g for the shortbread finger.

I would inject for each course as it arrives and if you are drinking wine or other alcohol with it you might be wise to reduce the dessert bolus by a unit or two especially if there is going to be dancing afterwards. Those would be my thoughts.
@DianeD I too would absolutely, definitely go and have fun.
Not going would mean that the diabetes is in control and I refuse to allow that.

I agree with most of your estimates but would push the dose up by 5g for Eton mess, especially if it is more meringue (i.e. sugar) than cream.

The only problem is who is the plus one? I have had T1 for longer than @rebrascora but her conversation about horses will be more interesting than my IT discussions. Maybe my sourdough recipes would work to my advantage? 😎

It obviously depends on the portion sizes, but the crostini could be as little as 10g carbs. If it’s just one slice, I’d call it 10g to be safe.

The bubble and squeak cake again depends on size. I’d look at it and estimate how much potato it contains, then bolus accordingly.

Eton Mess is a surprisingly lowish carb dessert unless it’s loaded with meringue. The strawberries and cream usually make up the bulk of it, so it could be 10 - 20g depending on meringue amounts. I disagree about the shortbread finger carbs. I love shortbread and the fingers you buy in the shop are usually around 12g or 13g carbs @DianeD

I’ll be your Plus One (sorry @helli and @rebrascora ) I promise to accurately eyeball your carbs and scoff any extras you might leave :D

Bolus for each course as it’s put in front of you. Look at the carbs and inject, and repeat the counting and injecting for each course. Err on the side of caution and remember that alcohol like wine and champagne can lower your blood sugar. You’ll be fine. Don’t let the diabetes put you off. Use your common sense, keep an eye on things and enjoy your meal.

Not been confident enough to correct yet.
If your nervous then you could pick a time when you’re high and not doing much, take 1u and wait 4hrs to see how much it drops you.

If there’s a meal that you know your dose is about right for (ie it gets you back to your premeal bg after 4hrs) then you could wait till you’re high, eat that meal and bolus 1u more than usual and see what happens.

Ideally I’d try this when somewhere between about 10-14 then you have plenty room to drop but you’re not so high that you’re becoming more insulin resistant.

And also the excitement of doing something different (presumably!) may affect your BG (up or down, depends on the person.)

Enjoy 🙂

Sorry about late reply, life got in the way. At the moment there is no plus one which is what most of the anxiety is about, doing this on my own, no wingman to pick up the pieces if I get it badly wrong.

Update

An unexpected invite to a ball on Saturday gave me a trial run for your advice. Nailed it! BG never got above 11 despite being on 'the party table' endless champagne (indulged a LOT) tequila rose shots (kept it at 2) and jagerbombs (passed those) lots of dancing etc. Finally saw my bed at 4am and no hypos overnight (what was left of it). Also no hangover the next day (go figure, because I so deserved a bad one).
Thank you all for your valuable advice. I will still be careful (not cocky) but looking forward to the next one going solo. Thank you all for the kind and thoughtful plus one offers but no tickets were available. Just need to get my dress repaired in time, put my heel through the hem. You know it's a good night when there's a repair bill involved!
