Congratulations on a fantastic HbA1c result. I am sure reducing the Metformin will not show a significant impact providing you continue with your dietary and lifestyle changes. I certainly don't miss taking Metformin!

Thanks Barbara. Oh me neither i have really suffered with it, even the slow release version. I wont be giving up this way of eating as feel so much better and don't want to feel as bad as i did pre diagnosis again.

I have been on 2000mg of metformin per day for nearly 3 months and my HbA1c number has halved. My doctor has told me to continue with the metformin for a further quarter.....not good as the flatulence side effects are not great at all...

The sooner I get off the stuff the better but it is probably too soon
Hi Gee1970
It was interesting to read how your levels have dropped. I was diagnosed the end of Nov with HbA1c of 90. I've been on 2000mg Metformin and am due to be tested again at the end of Feb. I had been wondering if/how my levels might change and this has given me hope that mine too have decreased ( I know everyone is different and there are many factors involved). I agree with the flatulence issue, I was terrible at the start but since swapping to the slow release I've been

Being very immature at 56yrs I find the wind amusing but my wife does not 🙄

With low carbs 70-100 daily and some exercise and 2000mg Metformin i managed to get down from 108 to 40 in 3 months and 37 in the next 3 months. I did lose a lot of weight which helped a lot. But depends on the individuals circumstances weight, diet etc and the way their body works i suppose as not everyone finds it easy and we are all individual.
I kinda knew what to expect at my next blood test as i use a monitor which i have found keeps me on the straight and narrow and lets me know what i can eat and what to avoid. Hope this gives you some hope and you see a positive result.

I came off Metformin completely after a discussion with my GP following my last HbA1c. Not noticed any change and my waking BGs are still OK.
Interestingly I came off Metformin entirely a few days ago after consultation with my DSN. I have been taking insulin since late October 2020 after having been re-diagnosed as type 1, following a type 2 diagnosis in Nov 2017.

I don't like to take aby more drugs than absolutely necessary, and now that I'm on insulin I deemed metformin unnecessary. I stopped taking it last Saturday and so far it has made no difference to my BG, although I understand it can stay in your system for around 4 days.

My DSN said there is potential for a slight weight gain after coming off Metformin, has anyone experienced this?

I didn't notice any weigh or appetite changes when I stopped taking Met.

I think it was originally used as an appetite suppressant back in the olden days, which may be where your DSN's thinking comes from.

When I stopped taking Metformin I also stopped taking Atorvastatin and I was a wreck, physically and mentally - but I did eventually realise I had lost a lot of weight some months later - at least 50lb, and without really trying - I was wandering around in a daze for some time.
I am pretty certain that eating low carb again was what brought me around and caused the weightloss, the tablets having done me no good at all. It did take some years for everything to feel normal again though.
After 4 years I am now remembering what I have read - which ought to be good, but for a while, everything was new again.

Yes - originally marketed as a weight loss drug. Then the docs prescribing it to their patients started talking and noted that the ones with diabetes had as a side effect, lower blood sugar after they started taking them - and the rest is history!
