I’ve just watched it and although the advice given wasn’t what most people here would do I think the family involved especially the lady wouldn’t have accepted a low carb diet anyway. She wasn’t changing a tin of beans so there’s no way she would have agreed to cutting out potatoes, bread etc.
At the start the lady said she was told that if they lost weight there’s a good chance they could reduce and even stop their medication I think this is the route the tv show went down. Looking at the bigger picture of seeing how awful their diet was of chicken nuggets and chips to changing it to more fruit, veg, vitamins. If your going to eat porridge surely it’s better to have a handful of fruit on it instead of syrup? At least then your getting fibre with it?
That is what my husband said to me when I was getting irate at their advice. I am concerned though that people who are pre-diabetic or diabetic will take this advice on board and think that eating lots of high glycaemic food is OK. It would be a good idea for DUK to make some representation to the BBC I think.

Not everybody that’s diabetic looks after or even tries to look after themselves. The changes they have made will help and hopefully it will lead to more changes. Diabetes is a very personal thing what works for one person will not work for another. This programme isn’t specifically about diabetes it’s an entertainment show at best. While the advice may not be perfect it’s baby steps process. Not everybody is capable of going cold turkey and quite frankly it’s what puts me off using this forum.

Hello Lyn68. My apologies if my comments have upset you. I was not intending to offend anyone. I understand that not everyone can give bread, potatoes etc up just like that. I have no problem with it but I know quite a few diabetics or borderline diabetics who cannot or don't want to and I would not criticise them for it. My concern with the programme was they were emphasising sugar and not mentioning that carbohydrates are turned to sugar as well by the body and I just felt it would have been a good idea.

We all have to manage our condition as best we can . We make choices each day which we are personally responsible for and no one can judge us for that . I have just watched this and was a little surprised that they didn’t even mention carbs. I have chosen to eat low carbs diet, but I miss jacket potatoes terribly . Anything potato based is not a good choice for me .

I watched after reading the comments on hear and I actually don't think the program was that bad!!! They didn't go on about carbs but they did highlight the amount of sugar in their diets. I know the amount of carbs should be looked at too, but not everyone does low carb, I don't! I thought the approach they took with the people featured was a good approach for them. I think if they had tried to get them to go low carb they wouldn't have stuck with it. The swaps were sensible swaps for them. They both lost weight, which is always a good thing. They weren't saying in the show this is how diabetics should eat, but showed a more balanced diet than the shows participants were having before. I personally love porridge with berries and have it most mornings!

I have to say I also watched this yesterday on iplayer with my jaw on the floor! But can I just add that I thought some advice was pretty good. Their aim was to get them both onto a healthier diet with more fruit and veg.
I follow a plant based diet not low carb for my type 2 so do eat porridge for example. I also eat potatoes, wholemeal pasta/rice, lentils etc. Admittedly in small amounts but still eat them. I eat no animal products so low carb would be tricky....not impossible....but not easy.
