Hi everyone. I am in need of some advice/tips for Easter. It has become a tradition in our house that ever Easter we have an easter egg hunt within our home. Now traditionally the children, age 12 and 8, have enjoyed this so much but always ended up with lots of chocolatey treats (my fault entirely and much too much for a non-diabetec). While I would still like to keep up this tradition within our small family (just the three of us), I obviously need to reduce the amount of chocolate they find, while still keeping them happy and entertained and not disappointed, not just for my T1 son but my daughter too. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks x

How about ditching the egg theme and going for some chocolate coins and some real coins wrapped in eggy themed paper?

Hi, we have used those little yellow chicks before and a prize for the most collected ?

An easter chick hunt :D

Tricky...

Part of me thinks you should just let him have the same experience as before - a few 'celebrations' a year don't go amiss and can help youngsters to feel less 'diabetes ruins everything' about things.

However I'm not quite sure how many eggs you are talking about... it sounds like quite a few? Chocolate is fairly slowly released (which is why it is rubbish for hypos) but in larger quantities it still perfectly capable of causing BG chaos and making him feel grotty.

Rather than having a hunt to find lots of scattered eggs, where fewer eggs might be disappointing, could you make it more if a 'treasure hunt' where you hide clues around and about the garden/house where each hidden clue leads to the next. That way they could work as a team to solve the puzzle and end up at the (smaller) egg stash that they divide between them.

Our kids loved those at birthday parties!

Great ideas, thanks. I have bought a couple of the very much smaller eggs and small lindt bunnies. The real coins wrapped in easter decor is a great idea too. Unfortunately, being a 12y old boy and 8yr old girl, they do not always work well as a team, but like to compete, but thanks for the idea xx

Get them to decorate hard boiled eggs and have a rolling competition on the lawn/park/hill whatever.

We do things like making Easter Bonnetts and before hand we make easter themed cards to send to family and friends who then send a coin back (maximum 20p). The coins are then all put together and we make a special event of buying whatever little feller wants withthe money, sometimes chcolate sometimes not.
