Earing CGM on the news

Just read on my phone this morning of a young student designed a CGM for worn on your ear , i went to the site https://www.intelligentliving.co/continuity-earring-monitors-glucose-levels-diabetics/ which made intresting reading.

Like idea of cgm not insulin delivery, stick with pump.

Yes i agree its aimed at none pumpers and those that dont like needles.

The sensor technology is the most interesting part of this idea, I hope he gets picked up by one of the pump manufacturers, the delivery system will surely be slower if it’s relying on mucus membrane absorption but if the sensor reaction time is quick it could be another bullet in the diabetics treatment gun

If it works, sure. It's still R&D.

My impression is there's a few ideas of measuring stuff (infrared, say, or radio waves) and then process it in some machine learned algorithm out pops a usefully accurate BG reading. Might work, but it hasn't yet so I'll stay sceptical.

I agree a number of these devices seem to get some publicity and then disappear into the ether,

Unfortunately they need investment, I know of a company developing a sensor design in USA and they had to leave it because of their small size and not enough spare cash to continue.

As ever all comes down to money, don't get investors your screwed. Many good ideas that would have born fruit falls by wayside for this reason, such is life my friend.

I'm sure in some cases there's just a need for more research (which means money). I just suspect in some cases there's more noise than signal in what they're measuring and ultimately the idea's doomed. (I seem to remember the contact lens idea ended up with them deciding that.)

(Obviously determining whether more research is worthwhile or ultimately just waste is a bit of a challenge.)

Well the contact lens would be a non starter for the likes of myself , I cannot wear contact lens.

I'm blowed if I'd ever have volunteered to wear a chrome earring - you couldn't only wear one anyway. Somewhat unrealistic idea if they think ladies would wear it. Bet they're all blokes.

I'm allergic to silver BTW - makes me itch and turns my skin and the silver thing, black. My first husband always wanted a coat of arms - crossed bumpers (which obviously would have been chrome) with spinning clays in the gaps top and bottom between them - he repaired cars for a good many years and been a clay pigeon shooter for decades. He might have had a shuttlecock in the left and right gaps. But I've no idea how my ear lobes feel about chrome anyway, nor no intention of finding out, as you may have gathered!

many many years ago my Bloods were taken from my ear lobes . by a mr smith from west suffolk hospital in Bury St Edmunds from 1957 to i think 1990 always had to rub my lobes so the blood would flow not sure what he would thought now .still many advances for the good control of Diabetes

I think the technology's based on GlucoWise (I think that's the same one Tim Cook was using for a while that works on the skin between fingers?). Anyway, if it's the same design that you just wear on an ear, that would be making a statement.

Odd earrings is not unusual nowadays. And some people just wear one.
As for whether "ladies" would wear it, many people with diabetes are more concerned with managing our condition than stylish jewellery. If that was really a concern, I doubt if many people would use insulin pumps because I find them difficult to hide (especially tubey ones).

I found the video very misleading. Recommendation to test twelve times a day?? Take "up to" ten doses of insulin?? Where do they get their numbers from? It then took me ages to work out what the puffer actually was.

Here in Germany it is normal for blood for Hba1c test at the doctor to be done in the ear, my clinic has a machine, the nurse takes a swab from your ear and 10 seconds after putting in the machine you have the result, no chance for avoiding the kick in the ass that they love to hand out lol

Some clinics have HBA1C machines here but not widely .
