DVLA Licence Revoke

🙂Hi there - I wonder if anyone could help/advise.

My husband was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes two years ago (he's in his mid-40s). Seven months ago he experienced a hypo whilst driving - although he didn't crash the car or hit anything he drove very erratically before finally stopping. Someone called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. Following tests he was told he had a water infection which probably caused the hypo. This has never happened since (or before) and he is very good and checking his levels before driving etc. etc.

To cut a long story short, the DVLA has revoked his licence (giving only a few days notice!) We've been to see the GP who feels that the DVLA have been very harsh and has agreed to do a letter to support my husband.

I just wondered if anyone else has been through something like this - what are the chances of the DVLA reversing their decision... This is such a worrying time as he needs a car for work as we live in a very rural place.

Would be grateful if anyone could advise 🙂

Hi there. Welcome. 🙂

Can't offer any real advice but if your GP is going to write a supporting letter then I would have thought you stand a reasonable chance of getting the licence back due to the mitigating circumstances of a urine infection.

I don't know if they still do, but they used to ask for reports from GP or consultant before renewing the licence so I guess this would be a similar situation. But the DVLA can be a law unto themselves I believe.

Best of luck.

Rob

Thanks - we're hoping for good news when we ring the DVLA tomorrow - I'm pinning my hopes on the fact that our GP knows more about my husband than their medical advisers!

Our surgery was sent a questionnaire to complete but another GP did it and it seems these questionnaires are just tick boxes and don't really allow you to elaborate (i.e. the infection).

Fingers crossed!

Hope all turns out well. It's better understood than it used to be and far less of a taboo.

Let us know the outcome. 🙂

If he didnt crash the vehicle how did the DVLA even find out about it.......

Its like me having a hypo and needing to pull over, thats happened before.....

Did he not have any hypo treatment in the car? I suppose if not and he needed help then more attention would of been drawn to the situation....

I would be positive about getting the license back.........he had a turn and dealt with it correctly........

I have heard of people who the DVLA wanted to revoked their license (for epilepsy in both the cases I have heard of). Their consultants were able to convince the DVLA that they were safe to drive.

Hope things work out for you.

The DVLA probably know because there is a part on the form that asks if you have ever experienced a hypoglycaemic attack whilst driving.

Update

Just thought I'd post an update .... still waiting to hear from the DVLA : mind you, having read other threads on the same topic as mine it seems the DVLA don't rush these things!

Our GP has written two very supportive letters which we have sent to the DVLA so hopefully this will help our case. We did look at just reapplying for his licence but it appears that to reapply for a revoked licence will cost us ?50.00 - my husband is going to ring the DVLA today to see how things are progressing.

Thanks for all your replies - I do appreciate it 🙂

P.S. The reason the DVLA found out about it was because when my husband was having the hypo he was driving erratically - although he stopped the car and sorted himself out, someone had telephoned the police/ambulance ...

Im afraid I dont know, but was thinking it might be a good idea to visit the citizens advice bureau?

Good luck with your appeal.

I would imagine, as you suggest, that the DVLA shut down for a lengthy period over christmas and will need to wait for all sorts of references.

They may want him to have a medical or limit him to 1 year for a while. It's impossible to predict unfortunately.

Hope you hear something positive soon.

Rob

i have been type 1 for 15 years and last year my diabetic nurse at hospital said i would have to stop driving for six months as my control was poor however my gp said my levels and controls were excellant and wrote in support of me ,i no longer visit the hospital just gp who is very good on diabetes ,i carry lucozade at all times in the car nd always test before driving and if on a longer trip stop every half hour or so .Dvla can only revoke your license if someone has told them of an incident but there will be a minimum six month ban if they do and then you will need a doctors report to get it back.I lost mine anyhow due to seizure s due to a reaction not a condition last year ,dont tell your insurace as it is a nightmare trying to get cover after return of license. Good luck bob

Revoked license on medical grounds for someone on a restricted license is free not 50 quid and they cannot stop you legally driving after the last day of your ban even if your new license has not arrived DVLA told me i had to carry a doctors letter with me until they had returned my license which may not be until Apil 2011 even though i started driving last Nov .I think the medical branch is snowed under as normal DVLA seems very quick normally.
Cheers Bob

With due respect this is not good advice.
You have to by law tell your ins company all relavent facts. Failure to do so makes your ins non valid.

sue,you are correct and i did give all info to insurers and dvla and then when i could legally drive insurance became almost impossible to find, it just seems being honest does not seem to pay .

😡I just thought I'd give an update of my initial thread about my husband's licence being revoked.

All these months on and he is STILL not driving :(

The DVLA would not give him back his licence so we eventually reapplied when we got to the year after the incident. Even though our GP sent them a letter saying he was medically fit to drive they still weren't happy and wanted further information. They sent the GP a questionnaire for him to complete which has been done and returned to the DVLA.

Still the waiting continues ................. 😡 😡

Hi again.

Sorry to hear you've had to wait so long and still not acheived anything. From your other thread asking about weight loss and swinging BGs, it may be that your husband needs some help with how he works out his ratios for eating and maybe have some help on adjusting dose, correcting highs and lows and using his test results effectively.

Has he ever had advice on any of these areas ?

Rob

Hi Rob,

We've only been counting carbs for a little while - we're due to see the dietician in a few weeks so she may want to adjust things after looking at his food diary. He does do correction doses if hes higher than 10, as she advised but it still a bit swings and roundabouts.

We'll get there in the end no doubt!

🙂

Glad to hear it. It's too easy to over correct and bring the BGs crashing down hours later, which then need correction carbs, etc, etc

Hopefully you can both work out a happy medium and then enjoy the normal chaos that the rest of us have. It'll never be a perfectly smooth ride but you can buffer against the bigger bumps and learn to steer round some of the potholes.

Good luck with it.🙂

Rob

hi lovethediabetic,
I am very interested in what you are doing, and how things are working out.
When you reapplied was it on the standard application for a driving licence form D1 and did you include the Medical Fitness to Drive form DIAB1 ?
Also, can you tell me more about the questionnaire sent to the doctor.
My situation is similar so please let us know the latest
Stan
