Hi all,
A is going on a DUK week holiday soon and we were just reading the list of activites:
cycling
swimming
kayaking
canooing
snow boardng
velodrome
skiing
climbing
archery
shooting
forest orienteering
abseilling
ropes
ski/bob/problem solving
sailing
initiative course

Not surprised he is so excited - i am!🙂

Also, because i am really rather pathetic, i couldnt bare to think he was so far away from me - so i have booked into a beach hut -(only accommodation left!) - just me and my 17 year old daughter and our bikes! Anyway, we googled the 2 postcodes of where A is staying and our beach hut - they are only 69ft apart!!!!!!!!How is that for coincidence?

Anyway, i just thought if there were any parents wondering if they should send their children - this might help them to understand what sort of things they get up to.😱:DBev

You are absolutely hilarious Bev. Yes I too would book in but then I wouldn't send Jessica anyway, you are braver than me. He'll be fine but they tend to run them a bit high for the duration but with all that activity maybe it is a good thing. It is lucky Alex hasn't got his pump yet as pumpers have not been allowed to go, at least that was the score last year, don't know about this year. They had no-one to look after any child on pump. Great eh, seeing as though this is the UK's biggest diabetes charity. Ummmm makes you think.

A beach hut sounds fab. Is there a website, I want to check out the beach hut myself, would love to stay in one. :D

I have heard they are run a bit high, so i am expecting this, but its a week away from me - he will love that!lol

They do take pumpers now - on the medical forms there is a pumpers section - so they do offer it.🙂

I will go and find the link for beach huts now for you. Ours sleeps 6 - in a beach hut!!!!I just hope its not a shed on the beach!😱Bev

This is a link for beach huts - but they only have the ones left that you rent for the day on the prom i think. Check the bit that says how many it sleeps - these are the only ones you are allowed to rent and sleep in. Bev

Good glad about the pumpers, that was dispicable when it happened.

It is indeed a break for Alex and you as brilliant.

Looked at the beach hut, they look fantastic. :D

wow i want to go!!!

i worried everytime my daughter went away with school but she was always ok.

She is going on holiday with a friend next week, its a haven site so hopefully she wont need to go off site, i will panic all the time she is gone.. she is 17 😱

Bev, I know he's young and this is his first time away and I'm a man, who has no children so please don't take this the wrong way (now here comes those 3 letters) but, shouldn't the apron strings be a little longer than 69ft?

Hi Alan!

Your absolutely right! And if you could find a way for me to happily be away from him - then please tell me!🙂

I would add to this, that, they arent allowed a mobile phone, the place he is staying in is a private place, no access to the public, he is not allowed to contact his family unless there is an emergency - so the likelihood of me even speaking to him is zilch! I just want the peace of mind that if anything happens - i am minutes away! I know i am pathetic - i wish i wasnt like this believe me! I need a break too! But i just cant let him go - and it has only been 8 months since he was diagnosed - so i know i am being over the top!😉:DBev

You are right but don't forget Alex has not even been diagnosed a year, the family have no experience of a holiday and activites for their son and his diabetes so I know that I would (less than if possible) 69 ft away !! If you ever have children (sorry don't know your circumstances) I'm sure you would be 69ft away as well or at least his mother would be without a shadow of a doubt.

My daughter has a school trip next year. She has been diagnosed 9 years and she is 9 years old ! The trip is York, we are south coast. I think what we will be doing is I will be going and will end up sharing a room with my daughter to do the night time tests and her normal school one to one carer will do the day times so I at least get a break and so will she from me ! It is very hard when you have kids. It is even harder if you have a kid with healthy issues. It makes is doubly hard to cut those strings believe me. :(

You beat me too it, I just put all this as well ! Pathetic, you ain't !!!! (I'm a sarf Londoner 😉) Sensible, you are, plus you get a holiday 🙂

Bev,
my wife has just read my reply (she thought I was on some porno site I'm sure) and she say's I'm being too harsh. She says that I should have a bit more consideration and that she was worried after my diagnosis and also that it took me a year before I was happy going to eat outside etc. If I was too forthright I apologise, I'll blame it on the cider.

Alan, its really not a problem! I realise i am probably being over protective - so dont worry about it! Cider? How do you bolus for that? I will need to know these things for future reference!:DBev

Bev,
I shouldn't say. I'm not a model patient, but my Hbac1 was 7.7, down from 8.5 (I think).

OOOoooh....York. I live there! She'll have a great time, I promise you. I love it here, and I'm 24 for heaven's sake!

That's hilarious. Wish someone read my emails and messages, I am way too forthright sometimes and get myself into all sorts of problems. I think your message was great as you only said what other people I'm sure thinks. It wasn't only directed at Bev either as in a round about way you spoke to all us parents. I didn't take offence either and yes how are you bolousing for cider.

This is a biggie for me already for when Jessica gets old enough for alcohol and sex !!!! I once quizzed a carpet fitter who I found out was diabetic and was fitting my hall stairs. I asked him about alcohol and sex !!! Think he could I was mad as Jessica was only 2 at the time. I told him I was preparing for her future eek 😉

I can't wait actually. I came on a school trip there when I was 14 and I loved it, its been a while though and I'm sure things have changed somewhat.

Just a couple of things - York is an absolutely wonderful city! And I don't bolus at all for cider, but that's just me!

Oh, maybe a third thing - bev, even at my age I can see further than 69ft - are you going in disguise? Maybe with big ears....😱:D

after mondays retinopathy screen bev could borrow my sunnies, moustache, peak cap and.. oh yes raincoat, along with the ears Alx will never know she was there

hehehe

I could lend Bev a Kate Bush mask as a disguise...:D

Seriously, have fun Bev.

If you feel comfortable being 69 feet away then do so!
